Terang Bulan is the state anthem of Perak Darul Ridzuan, a state in Peninsular Malaysia, and also contributed the melody for the Malay national anthem, the Negaraku.

[edit] National Anthem
Before its independence, the national anthem of Malaya was the British national anthem, God Save the Queen. In 1957, the Negaraku was created. The choice of song was made by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the frst Prime Minister of Malaysia who is also known as Malaysia's 'Father of Independence'. Tunku Abdul Rahman headed a group of judges at the Depoh Police Hall in Kuala Lumpur to decide on which of the four songs that the Royal Police Band presented. Terang Bulan, the state anthem of Perak was chosen for having Malay cultural elements. After the board of Malay Kings had given their favour on the decision made by the judges, the lyrics were re-composed by Saiful Bahari based on the Terang Bulan.
