Terracotta ball from Ilios with various symbols including the swastika type and variations on that type. This ball suggests that the swastika motif may have been associated with the footprints of predatory birds (such as the owl) having zygodactylous or semizygodactylous (outer toe reversible) feet and could be related to writing. Chinese lore upholds such an interpretation as Ts'ang Chieh, the four eyed legendary inventor of writing, derived his inspiration to create written symbols from noticing the marks of birds' feet in the sand. His ancient style is known as niao chiwen--"bird foot-prints writing." [MacCulloch, C.J.A. 1928] See:
