[edit] Odd signature
Try again? [1] (SEWilco 15:49, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC))
- Ha! Oops. Way too many tildes; must have been strong coffee. Thanks for catching that. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 17:21, 1 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Belated thanks for work on Pukavik
Thanks for filling over the junk text on Pukavik with real data. I think that only another editor who doesn't speak Swedish who has dug up some data can understand what effort it takes to get even a little bit on Pukavik. LSNED. --Unfocused 19:37, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Sea sock merge
Hi, I saw your suggestion on vfd. Rather than a merge into Kayak, what do you think of a merge/redirect to spraydeck? The two articles *are* talking about the same thing, right? Joyous 01:29, Jun 5, 2005 (UTC)
- Ah, good catch! Yes, that would make perfect sense. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 16:42, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] My Signature
From what I understand as long as I don't edit the signature (I would protect the page if I could) the use of {{sig}} does not have a substantial additional server requirement. If I choose to change the signature I will use {{sig2}}. Thanks for the kind words re TfD. I think that this issue re meta-templates (or subtemplates) causing a lot of overhead is somewhat overblown as the hardware issues would not be significantly resolved by getting rid of them. Additionally, the use of references just seems like good programming. Trödel|talk 03:41, 5 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Kudos
You were quick with the dimethyl terephthalate picture! I'm impressed. Could you also diagram polyethylene terephthalate, since you're already most of the way there? I'm planning to add a "synthesis" section to that article any day now. Keep up the good work, Joel 03:57, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for getting back to me. I know what it's like when other commitments interfere; I'm actually trying to cut back on my Wikipedia participation a bit. Whenever you get around to it will be fine, since it will probably prompt me to write lots of other synthesis details.--Joel 16:50, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] My RFA
TenOfAllTrades, Thank you very much for your vote of support on my recent RFA. Now that I've been promoted, I'll work to ensure that my further contributions to wikipedia demonstrate that your trust was well-justified. Regards, Fawcett5 18:57, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Everyking
In the short term I am far more interested in getting my restrictions removed than in trying to change any policy, which I don't think there is much hope for at the present time. If you'd like to help me out, you could argue in my favor regarding the ArbCom case. Everyking 19:09, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- By encouraging you to make positive, good-faith policy contributions and suggestions—rather than taking shots at the ArbCom—there might be the beneficial side effect that the ArbCom could consider you rehabilitated.
- I want to give you the benefit of the doubt with respect to policy. I'd like to see you make an honest effort to bring about change...or stop complaining. I don't think it's appropriate for other Wikipedians to kick you (or anyone) while you're down. I actually disagree with some of the policy suggestions that you make on your Principles and Points page, but there's a right way and a wrong way to handle that. I don't think your suggestions should be ignored just because you've made some past errors in judgement.
- But I'm not prepared to involve myself with your request to have your Ashlee Simpson restrictions lifted. As far as I can tell, you really haven't acknowledged why much of the community was so upset about your actions. You've haven't given a strong indication that it won't be a problem again. Rather, you've chosen to criticize the sysops, ArbCom members, and policy involved so often than Calton has turned it into a drinking game. (That might be a bit of a WP:DICK thing to do, but he also has something of a point.)
- Make constructive comments (or just stop the endless criticism), say a mea culpa, and in another month or two I'd probably be willing to contribute to your application to lift sanctions. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 21:14, 7 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- After reading that I have no interest whatsoever in having any kind of discussion with you. Please review the facts of the matter. Everyking 01:30, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- I'm sorry to hear you say that. We apparently perceive the situation differently. --TenOfAllTrades (talk/contrib) 04:21, 10 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for your support
Thank you for voting on my RFA. Have some pie! I was pleasantly surprised by the sheer number of supporters (including several people that usually disagree with my opinion). I shall do my best with the proverbial mop. Yours, Radiant_>|< 08:03, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] opposing?
There were nine oppose-votes to my RFA, six of which were in good faith, and I certainly won't hold that against the voters. These three people, however, have accused me of a variety of crimes without offering any evidence, have been rather rude about it, and have refused to discuss the matter. I have not counter-accused them. I have not called them names. I have merely pointed out the fact that several people cited these oppositional votes as the very reason for their own support vote; by my count, seven people did that. In other words, when they oppose people this way it isn't helping their cause, and they may want to consider handling such matters differently in the future. Yours, Radiant_>|< 15:01, Jun 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Doppelgangers
I noticed your comments in the "Pre-empting impersonators" section on Village pump. I wanted you to know I created a template for these accounts: Template:doppelganger. Check it out! Essjay · talk 12:38, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

- I appreciate your concern; I'll de-watch your page soon enough. I would write a policy, but I've never done it before (I wouldn't be opposed to doing it, I just don't want to "do it wrong"). As for the category, I thought of that (most of the templates I stole ideas from to create this one had categories attached), but I don't know how to make one (I still a bit new to all this). I definately agree with you, however, that at this juncture more discussion is warranted before creating a category. If you decide you don't have time to draft the "Doppelganger policy" (sounds like a WWII OSS scheme to me), let me know and I'll take a stab at it. Essjay · talk 14:09, Jun 13, 2005 (UTC)

- You're more than welcome to watch over my shoulder; I just doubt that my talk page is as interesting as some others. :-) Creating categories is actually ridiculously easy; that's really the big reason why it shouldn't be entered in to in haste. If you add the text
- [[Category:CategoryName]]
- to the bottom of an article, that will create a category automagically. Click on the red category link at the bottom of the page and you can add a description to the category. Presto!
- Policy, meanwhile, is almost as simple to create. Create an article in the Wikipedia namespace (follow this redlink, for example: Wikipedia:Doppelganger account). Draft something interesting. Don't forget to slap a {{proposed}} template on top of it, so people won't think you're trying to sneak in a new official policy. When you think it's ready for comment, drop a note in the Policy section of the Village Pump, and also on Wikipedia:Requests for comment (bottom section, labelled General convention and policy issues).
- You can also draft a policy proposal in a subpage of your user space, and invite comment there. Either way, if you're not comfortable attacking it yet, then I'd be glad to work with you (or possibly dive into it myself) over the next little while. Cheers! --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 14:30, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- 10: I really liked your policy proposal; that said, since you gave the gold seal for mutilation, I mutilated it quite a bit. (I really got into the spirit of it...Like it was a submission from one of my students [insert evil smile here].) I await your thoughts with great expectation. Essjay · talk 04:24, Jun 14, 2005 (UTC)

- Yep. And if you've got anything more to say, move it back to the left margin. ;-) --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 01:40, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Okay, okay, I'm back on the left margin (I was hoping I'd get to a point where there was one word per line, darn).
I moved the policy to the namespace, and I elminated the resulting redirect from your sandbox. I moved the page rather than cut/pasted in order to mantain the talk page and the page history; unfortunatley, I didn't realize the page was your regular sandbox until after I moved it (when I checked for double redirects), and I unwittingly took the history of your sandbox with the policy history to the new page. (I don't know how big of a problem this is for you, but I wanted to let you know. I also thought you might want to know, you still have references around the wiki to former contents of your sandbox.)
I've placed notices on the Policy section of the Village Pump, and also on Wikipedia:Requests for comment with regard to the policy, and also jumpstarted discussion on the policy's talk page. Anything else I need to do? Essjay · talk 03:38, Jun 15, 2005 (UTC)
- Nah, it doesn't bother me that the page's history has migrated; I probably should have had the page speedied to clean it up sometime in the past. Aside from confusing anyone who delves too deeply into the policy's history, it shouldn't do any harm.
- I think you've fulfilled the necessary steps for notification. Anybody who is likely to have an opinion is probably watch at least one of those two pages. Cheers! --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 03:56, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] By The Way
I hereby award you the Doppelganger Service Award for your contributions to the Doppelganger cause, as well as a plenary indulgence for being a great guy. You have been helpful over and above the call of duty.

- I am honoured to receive the DSA, and most wickedly pleased for the absolution. I will attempt to resist the urge to commit new Wikisins to make up for it. --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 04:32, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Adminship?
Are you interested in being an administrator? You seem to understand Wikipedia policy reasonably well, and you've shown that you try to be diplomatic about disagreements, so I think you're well-qualified. I would be happy to nominate you if you're willing, please let me know. --Michael Snow 21:19, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
In the face of such emphatic peer pressure, I can do nothing but accept. If asked, I will insist that Essjay made me do it, however. --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 02:40, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
- Okay, I've posted the nomination. You clearly know how the process works from here already, so I won't bother to explain it. --Michael Snow 03:18, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Mouse
Ouch! The crackpot mouse bit me! You need to make that thing read "Bad mouse! No Biting!" BTW, laughing my derriere off over that one... Essjay · talk 02:39, Jun 16, 2005 (UTC)
- Good point. I've specially trained the second mouse to address this important health and safety concern. --TenOfAllTrades(talk) 02:46, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Voting on TfD
Thanks, I'd just finished writing my new one when you reverted to me old one. Anyway they're basically the same. --Fir0002 22:26, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Congratulations!
Congratulations! It's my pleasure to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. You might find the new administrators' how-to guide helpful. Cheers! -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 03:22, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] CSD expansion
Hi there! Based on the discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion policy/Reducing VfD load, I've put together a proposal to expand CSD, here: Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Proposal. Before it is put to a general vote I would like your advise on the wording and intent; could you please take a look? Thanks, Radiant_>|< 13:32, Jun 23, 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Shark taxonomy
Hi! Tanks for the tips. Really I'havent in mind to merge Shark taxonomy list with the basic (general) articles for ex. Hexanchiformes. The main concept of this project is to explore as far as one can go the complex of taxonomical classification of sharks (and in a near future other fishes), and present all living and described species with there common/commercial names. The ideia that I've about Hexanchiformes an other similar pages is for describe general caracheristics of specimens, habitat, geographic distribution, ... and in all these articles create an internal link to the specific taxonomical classifiation. I'm open for discuss this concept of mine and of course I'm waiting for your opinions.Thanks,--JPPINTO 03:09, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Much belated thanks.
Hey, nice mop&bucket! Congrats! And thank you for supporting my RFA back in May. Unfortunately, a family situation arose just at that time, so I haven't had much time & energy for heavy-duty mopping. Things are getting back to normal, so I hope to be a more active admin soon. Best, FreplySpang (talk) 23:09, 24 Jun 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Comments
Either move the whole thread to "comments", for context, or leave it be. Either is fine by me. -- Netoholic @ June 28, 2005 05:27 (UTC)
[edit] The third way
Hello.
Thanks for your message. It's actually nice seeing a message that sounds friendly, and not robotic and/or angry. Nice change from these days. Anyway, yes, I know what you mean. I've been told before about the way I should already have befriended with other admins. Thing is, at least until now, I've never done it. No real friends here. I work alone. There is someone, however, but it's a user I've known from before. A personal friend of mine.
Regarding bringing a neutral admin to the discussion, I think I've done something similar, but it wasn't aimed at sysops specifically. I just went way back on my list of contributions, so I saw I posted something at Requests for Comment indeed, and at Wikipedia:Third opinion. I thought it would be enough, but I didn't get results with the speed I was hoping to get.
Well, thanks for all the suggestions. I do understand what you mean, and I'll do my best to remember next time.
See you.--Kaonashi 29 June 2005 03:56 (UTC)
