- In linguistics, the term tense may refer to two unrelated concepts:
- Grammatical tense, the inflection of a verb to indicate whether past, present, or future time is intended
- Tenseness, a phonological quality frequently associated with vowels and occasionally with consonants
- In anatomy, the term tense may refer to muscles in a state of contraction.
- The term tense may also refer to various meanings of tension.
