Tenpō
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tenpō (Japanese: 天保) was a Japanese era after Bunsei and before Kōka and spanned from 10 December 1830 to 2 December 1844 (in the Gregorian calendar, from 23 January 1831 to 9 January 1845). The reigning emperor was Ninko.
[edit] Change of era
Due to the disasters of a great fire in Edo and an earthquake at Kyoto, on December 10 (?), 1830, the Bunsei era ended, and the Tenpō era began.
[edit] Name etymology
"欽崇天道、永保天命" ("Respect and worship the Ways of heaven. Eternally keep the Mandate of Heaven.") The abbreviation can roughly be read, "Heavenly Imperial protection".
