State Route 79 (abbreviated SR 79) is a state highway in southwestern Lake County, Tennessee. This highway has a dual primary & secondary designation. Primary State Route 79 runs from mile 6.66 to mile 10.37. Secondary State Route 79 runs from mile 0 through 6.66. The western terminus is located at the Mississippi River (Island 15) in the extreme southwestern portion of the county. The eastern terminus is located at Tennessee State Route 78 south of Ridgely, Tennessee. SR 79 crosses the Great River Road/Tennessee State Route 181 and the "Big Levee" at 6.66, from this point to Mile 0 the highway runs across flood prone areas and has been severely damaged over the years due flooding from the Mississippi River. This section of the highway features rough asphalt, gravel, dirt, crushed rock, along with cracked and eroded concrete and is unsigned in the field but maintained by TDOT as SR 79. There are only two communities along the route as the area is very sparsely populated, Cottonwood Grove, TN is unincorporated and Hathaway, TN which is abandoned. Hathaway, TN, although abandoned, has a rich history and played an important role in the settlement of Lake County, TN.
