[edit] Creating Templates

How do you create a template?

Help:Template and Wikipedia:Template namespace have the information you're looking for. Grutness...wha? 01:26, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Edit war template

I propose creating a {{edit war}}, a template to be put in talk pages stating something like "An editor has raised his concern that this article is under a prolonged edit war", and categorizes them into Category:Articles in edit war. Mediators and people who like discussing and solving problems could then check this category to find articles in need. What do you think? -- ReyBrujo 03:14, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I think it is a great idea. John Reaves 11:19, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I created a template...

Well, sort of - I stole it from fr-wiki. :) It's in my sandbox. I'm just posting this here to see if anyone knows if there's something like this on en already, and whether I'm just wasting my time. Thanks! :) riana_dzasta 13:56, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Never mind - too much code, too clunky, plus Sceptre pointed out that #time does the same thing much more effectively. Thanks anyway! riana_dzasta 19:48, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ignoring column rules?

I am trying to edit a template here, and what I am trying to do is make it so that each row is independent. Another words, if one row has long text for one side and another row has long text on the other side, they don't interfere with each other's spacing. Is this possible? --blm07 21:05, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] WIKIPEDIA:TEMPLATE concept

WIKIPEDIA:TEMPLATE is redirecting to this project page.

Sugestion (add text) to explain concepts:

The wiki templates are powerful tools for editing Wikipedia articles. A "wiki template" is a kind of sub-template, and the "Wikipedia Edit Language" uses the notation {{template-name}} for the sub-template reference. Use [[Template:template-name]] on edit to produce a link to the template declaration (source code defining the template).

Technical note: "Wiki template references" are embedded on the "Wikipedia Edit Language", as a web template embedded language, using the open {{ and close }} hooks, for enclose the wiki template language syntax, where valid names and valid instructions can be used, like template reference, as {{disambig}}, and conditions, as {{#if:{{{variable_foo|}}} | foo yes |foo is blank }}.

[edit] Jump to TOC

I've seen on some talk pages a template which allows you to skip past all the templates which go on a talk page (like good article, AfD nomination, featured in other languages, part of a WP, etc.). I couldn't find it in this project page. What is it, and shouldn't it be listed here? --Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 02:25, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

It's {{skiptotoctalk}}. I've added it to Wikipedia:Template_messages/Talk_namespace. *Spark* 02:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! --Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 04:26, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] {{city-state}}

This seems quite obvious, given the number of times I want to post X, Y where X is a US city with article at X, Y and Y is the state. But I couldn't find it with a search, so I created it myself. Apologies if this in inappropriate, and please merge it if such already exists. Thanks, PhilipR 06:10, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Protection log link on Template:Protected, et al

I started a discussion about adding a link to the protection log at Template talk:Protected#Protection log link. Please give your opinion if you are interested. Mike Dillon 03:14, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Game-guide content

I have a few videogame articles on my watchlist which I've contributed quite a bit too, mostly relatively stable b-quality articles. Almost all edits to these articles are of a game-guide nature, and are thus typically removed in short order by me or some other contributor.

I find two things about the situation to be quite annoying: firstly, the endless repetative work of reverting solely game-guide oriented edits, and secondly, the fact that those interested in contributing to these articles do not fully comprehend WP's stance on such content, as they might otherwise see fit to improve the articles in other respects.

Would it be appropriate to make some sort of template(s) (main-space or talk-space) advising editors to refrain (as opposed to removing/fixing, as there are already templates for that) from adding unencyclopedic content? -FrostyBytes 09:33, 13 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hide and Unhide

Whats the secret of hide and unhide in templates. When I use the template: Template:G8 it appears unhidden, but in articles that contain it, the default is that it is already hidden. Please answer at my page. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) 01:09, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Responded on user talk page: [1]. Mike Dillon 03:10, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User warn prompt for {{db-nocontent}}

The template {{db-nocontent}} needs a prompt, that can be copied and pasted, suggesting you warn the user about the deletion (simiar to other templates, such as {{db-bio}}. John Reaves 09:36, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New User template: {{user-Canada-military-maybe-not-here}}

Created this for purposes similar to the {{user-US-Military-maybe-not-here}} template, for those members of the Canadian military who wish to identify themselves as such. Template appears as

Warning This user is a member of the Canadian Forces and may be away from Wikipedia for long periods of time, but will most probably return. Emails sent to this user and messages left on this user's talk page may not be replied to for a while. Canadian Forces badge

[edit] Lead

Is there a template to suggest that a page should revise its introduction or add one in accordance with WP:LEAD. Please respond to my talk page. TonyTheTiger 16:50, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Lets keep a topic on one place, here for instance? --Van helsing 20:25, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New template proposal

Most of the warnings read too harshly and suggest blame. I think we need a more neutral template. Consider the article Proprioception. It is so poorly organized as to be misleading, there are several statments which are not entirely untrue but are written as if the author has no idea what he or she is talking about, and way too much time is spent on topics that are not particularly relavant to the article.

I propose a It has been sugested that this article is misleading template. Anyone opposed?

--Selket 10:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Try a more general (but gentle) template to put on the editor's talk page, {{subst:ArticleConcern}} or {{subst:artc}} -- the one required parameter being the article name, after which you can add specific concerns as an optional parameter, and they become the second paragraph of the note.
For instance, {{subst:artc|Proprioception|It may be perceived as so poorly organized as to be misleading, there are several statements which are not entirely untrue but are written as if the author has no idea what he or she is talking about, and way too much time is spent on topics that are not particularly relevant to the article.}} -- results in --

My concern about article Proprioception

Hello, Recipient, and thank you for contributing to Wikipedia!

I hope not to seem unfriendly or argumentative, but I'm concerned about article Proprioception, which you have edited. Could we discuss that concern here?

It may be perceived as so poorly organized as to be misleading, there are several statements which are not entirely untrue but are written as if the author has no idea what he or she is talking about, and way too much time is spent on topics that are not particularly relevant to the article.

I'd appreciate learning your own views, understanding your reasons for your particular edits, and discussing what alternatives might avoid raising this concern.

You have several options freely available to you:

  • If you can relieve my concern through discussing it here, I can stop worrying about it.
  • If you prefer, we can discuss the matter at Talk:Proprioception, where other editors could contribute their viewpoints.
  • If we can't agree in either setting, we can ask for help through Wikipedia's dispute resolution process, such as asking for a "third opinion", or requesting comments from other Wikipedians. Admins usually abide by agreements reached through this process.
  • If you prefer not to deal with me at all, you can ask others for guidance: there are experienced Wikipedians who offer mentorship, "adoption", or advocacy; and many admins will also make the time to answer earnest questions on their talk pages (though some are either very busy or away on "Wikibreak").
  • Any time you feel overwhelmed by the complexity of it all, you can simply post {{helpme}} here on your talk page, with a description of your questions or problems, and someone will show up to help you find answers or solutions.

Let me reassure you that my writing here means I don't think your editing is so bad that you should just stop or be stopped. This is more a case where opinions might differ, and it would be good to reach some consensus -- either here, or at Talk:Proprioception, or at WP:RFC. So I look forward to a friendly discussion, and to enjoying your continued participation on Wikipedia. Thank you again! -- Ben 00:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

{end quote} Notice that the template automatically signs the note, unless you tell it not to (with the optional parameter sig=n). Similar or related templates are listed in that template's documentation. I hope these help! -- Ben 00:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] copied text template

[edit] New templates rfarb, rfcuser, rfcn, and listuser

As a timesaver for several frequently used types of links, I've created:

{{rfarb}}
  • links to WP:RFARB arbitration page on a topic or user, if it exists
  • enter topic, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. article/user of a talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label
Example 1: {{rfarb|Waldorf education}}WP:RFARB page on "Waldorf education"
Example 2: {{rfarb|Waldorf education|Steiner schools issue}}Steiner schools issue (same link)
Example 3: {{rfarb|Jimbo Wales}}There is no WP:RFARB page on "Jimbo Wales"
Example 4: {{rfarb}}There is no WP:RFARB page on "Example"
{{rfcuser}}
  • links to WP:RFC/USER page on a user's conduct, if it exists
  • enter username, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. username of a user page or user talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label
  • enter RFC number, else defaults to highest (standard-format) RFC found, up to 20
Example 1: {{rfcuser|Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington}}WP:RFC/USER page on "Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington" (links to latest RFC, #Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington 2)
Example 2: {{rfcuser|Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington|Nick's RFC}}Nick's RFC (same link)
Example 3: {{rfcuser|Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington|number=1}}WP:RFC/USER page on "Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington" (links to first RFC, unnumbered)
Example 4: {{rfcuser|Jimbo Wales}}There is no WP:RFC/USER page on "Jimbo Wales"
Example 5: {{rfcuser}}There is no WP:RFC/USER page on "Example"
{{rfcn}}
  • links to WP:RFC/NAME section on a username, or the page top if no such section exists
  • enter username, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. username of a user page or user talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label
  • enter archive (oldid) number, else defaults to current page
Example 1: {{rfcn|DeveloperDan}}Current WP:RFC/NAME on "DeveloperDan" (closed topic)
Example 2: {{rfcn|DeveloperDan|oldid=111584225}}Archived WP:RFC/NAME on "DeveloperDan"
Example 3: {{rfcn|DeveloperDan|here|oldid=111584225}}here (same link)
Example 4: {{rfcn}}Current WP:RFC/NAME on "Template messages"
{{listuser}}
  • links to Special:Listusers listing for a username (or next one if that one doesn't exist), confirming or disproving the account's existence (whether or not there's a user page or user talk page); listing also shows "(Administrator)" if account holds that status
  • enter username, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. username of a user page or user talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label
  • enter number of entries to show as limit, else defaults to 1 (one)

More documentation at each template. I hope these help! -- Ben 23:50, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New template rfcu

{{rfcu}}
  • links to WP:RFCU (checkuser) page on a user, if it exists
  • enter username, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. username of a user page or user talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label

[edit] New template usercheck, addition suggested to user5

{{usercheck}}
  • Looks for same pages as {{userblock}}, plus three of the above new page-check templates (plus new ssp, see below)
Example: {{Usercheck|Monicasdude}}Monicasdude (talk · contribs · count · logs · block log · lu · rfa · rfb · rfarb · rfcuser · lta · rfcu · ssp)

Suggested {{rfcu}} be added to the end of {{user5}}, thus:

Example: {{User5|Jimbo Wales}}Jimbo Wales (talk contribs page moves  block user block log  rfcu)

Since {{User5}} is used extensively at Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets, it could be very helpful to have that link at the end finding any checkuser pages that exist for the users listed. -- Ben 04:37, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] New template ssp

{{ssp}}
  • links to WP:SSP (suspected sock puppet) page on a user, if it exists
  • enter username, else defaults to basepagename, e.g. username of a user page or user talk page
  • enter linklabel, else defaults to descriptive label
Example 1: {{ssp|Mykungfu}}WP:SSP page on "Mykungfu"
Example 2: {{ssp|Mykungfu|Mykungfu's latest SSP}}Mykungfu's latest SSP (same link)
Example 3: {{ssp|Jimbo Wales}}There is no WP:SSP page on "Jimbo Wales"
Example 4: {{ssp}}There is no WP:SSP page on "Example"

[edit] Template for splitting categories?

Does one exist? I don't see one listed at Category:Split maintenance templates. If not, could one be created? I think Template:Splitsections could be adapted with only a few word changes. CovenantD 02:36, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Ambiguous Dating

Is there a template to put either on top of an article or section or at the end of a sentence that asks for clarification of words like "recently" or "soon"? If there isn't, I'd be happy to make it. I'd just need to know which is preferred: a general top-of-page one, a specific sentence one, or both. Mr.Z-mantalk¢Review! 23:06, 2 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fictional character template

How would I go about creating a template for a list of fictional characters?

I need to devise a way to do so, because there are some fictional charcters (from films and comics) whose articles I have either modified or created and need to thus find a way to have categories for them. --KnowledgeLord 20:03, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
