- Template:Meter (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs), Template:Gram (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs), Template:Kilogram (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs), Template:Newton (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs), Template:Joule (edit|talk|history|links|watch|logs)
I'm basically raising for deletion all of Category:Unit templates. All are completely unused except for template:Meter, which occurs in Åre (ski area). The templates are pointless; all they produce is the unit symbol for that unit (indeed, in the case of metre, even that was wrong (M not m)), and have virtually no use, as well as going against WP:MOSNUM, which states that units should be spelled out in text. If unit symbols are really needed, then the conversion templates such as template:feet should be used, as at least they do something useful. --Laïka 18:29, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

This is a list of space-related categories that is part of Wikipedia:WikiProject Space. The WikiProject in general does not look like it is currently active. This category list itself is difficult to maintain, especially given recent activity in renaming categories of astronomical objects. I left a message at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Space asking if anyone would object to this template's deletion. I received no responses, so I assume that I will not offend anyone by deleting this list. --Dr. Submillimeter 12:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Recent upgrades to {{Infobox FL State Road}} have made this template redundant, as the appearance of this template can now be produced using Infobox FL State Road. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 03:36, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

The result of the debate was keep as consensus is that the deletion process was done improperly. Patstuarttalk|edits 19:56, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
Superceded by Template:List of public transport infrastructure in Sydney. --Joestella 09:22, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Comment You've edited the template to change its content to be identical to the new one before bringing it to TFD. The two look identical now, but the old version had a distinct purpose. This isn't the proper way to do things. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 09:31, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Keep for reasons above; and the fact that deleting this template will delete all the links where the new template should be; and the fact that the old template still had useful information in its history which will not be available if it is deleted. There's no reason to delete this even if it has been superceded. JROBBO 12:40, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Strong keep. Of course it's redundant now, you transcluded the other template onto it... -Amarkov blahedits 15:51, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

The result of the debate was Speedy delete. If you want to create a wikiproject-specific invite template/s, that's fine (this template could be modified toward that end). But, as for the English Wikipedia, stick to {{welcome}}, et cetera. Thanks. El_C 14:27, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
This template was created by User:FrummerThanThou on 12 December 2006, originally with a picture of Albert Einstein in it [1] This is an unwise an ill-considered welcoming template for new Wikipedians who may be Jewish. It now displays a very large Star of David, uses Hebrew language terminology, such as Bruchim, which means "blessed", which may only be appreciated by some Orthodox Judaism users. But how on Earth is anyone supposed to know when a new user is Jewish or Israeli or not, and why should it matter? User names are not infallible keys to the identity of new users who may or may not be Jewish and even if they are may not apprecaite such a gaudy welcome. The template has even been placed on the pages of anonymous users [2] And there are sure to be new users who are simply offended and even outraged by this kind of welcome (does anything similar even exist on Wikipedia?) Quite simply, this template is in violation of WP:NPOV and should be deleted ASAP. IZAK 07:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Delete for above reasons. IZAK 07:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Keep, above reasons are invalid. Does not fail WP:NPOV and fulfills welcoming committee goals. It should be placed on user pages of any editors who have made useful edits to Judaism related articles, including the anon users mentioned above. How it can be used inappropriately is not a case against it. FrummerThanThou 07:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Frummer: Merely writing that it "Does not fail NPOV" does not make that statement true! One should read Wikipedia:Templates for deletion carefully. This template is so gaudy that it makes anyone blink. What about new editors who have never made any significant edits? Are we now going to patrol and see who makes how many edits to "Jewish" articles? Maybe we should create a "Hello gentile" template? How about a "Hello antisemites" template for editors who write hostile comments against Jewish and Israeli articles. They would deserve "equal time" wouldn't they? This template opens a Pandora's box of problems as theoretically there could now be millions of individualized welcoming templates for each individial type of user. Clearly neither functional nor acceptable. IZAK 23:46, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Delete, I'm Jewish myself but I don't believe that there's a "jewish side" of wikipedia. Welcoming people to it will just give them the wrong impression. Welcome messages should be general and accepting, not specific pushes to get people to join a wikiproject. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 08:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Comment Frummer immediately placed the template onto my talk page with a welcome message. I'd prefer not to have assumptions made about my identity and opinions, and doubt anyone else would. Any use of this template automatically does that. Imagine if there were templates that assumed the recipient was black or gay, and would automatically want to get involved in a related wikiproject. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 08:59, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Other users may feel welcomed and appreciated. The template is only being placed on users who have made relevant edits to Judaism related articles which upon my judgement are edits that make the identity of the user clear. FrummerThanThou 09:04, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Perhaps you should rephrase the template to "I've noticed that you've edited judaism-related articles, perhaps you'd be interested in the judaism wikiproject?" without making assumptions about the editor's identity or using specific terms that may not be clear to everyone. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 09:14, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Now that might be a suggestion, though I would like to hear from other editors just to make sure there is seriously something wrong with it, even after taking into consideration that I only post this on obviously Jewish editors. FrummerThanThou 10:43, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Frummer: If you cannot see the problem with the above statements by you that: "The template is only being placed on users who have made relevant edits to Judaism related articles which upon my judgement are edits that make the identity of the user clear" and "I only post this on obviously Jewish editors" (emphasis mine) then we have a very big problem on our hands here. To the best of my knowledge, noone in the history of Wikipedia has ever said such a thing as some kind of a welcoming "Jewish infallible commissar" and it's best that you let go of this function ASAP before some people get really enraged around here if they log onto Wikipedia and read your unsolicited "Bruchim welcoming message" and totally misread you. Delete - Insultingly presumptuous. Milto LOL pia 12:00, 14 December 2006 (UTC)- Cleanup, remove the coloring, pictures, and Hebrew. Make it look the the regular welcome template, with an extra paragraph of "Based on you edits it seems that you may be interested in Jews and Judaism, you may want to see the Judaism WikiProject a central place to discuss changes related to Judaism". Jon513 12:37, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Cleanup - Jon's idea makes more sense, but definitely tone down the JEW!!! feeling of it so it's not presumptuous. Milto LOL pia 12:47, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Keep. Use of it and its existance are 2 seperate things, I suggest it'll be kept and improved. Deletion of it will seem harsh. Amoruso 19:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Delete, I'm sure there were good intentions behind this template but it is in very bad taste to tailor a welcome based on an editor's presumed ethnicity. --MPerel ( talk | contrib) 23:45, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Comment I have made some change based on Jon's suggestions. RE comment above, "ethnicity" since when do us Jews consider ourself ethnic? We relate to each more on our religious standing. Hence when say a non jew received this message, if offended it would not be on ethnic grounds, but religious. frummer 02:45, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Sort of keep I think it would be best to have separate welcome and invitation messages. New users probably have no idea what WikiProjects are, so it would be better to give them the vanilla welcome and then in a separate message invite them to the project. They probably don't really understand how wikipedia works at this point, so this is a bit much. Koweja 03:42, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'm not involved in any wikiprojects myself, but do you reall want a bunch of n00bs mucking them up before learning the basics? ALso, a n00b's unacquaintance with strict NPOV-ness would make this tactic attract POV pushers. Milto LOL pia 04:57, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Delete per IZAK & MPerel. The new users are usually overwhelmed and confused enough. I suggest using a common flavor of welcome for everyone. We should not make assumptions and/or guess the users' identity before they do it on their own. If after a while you want to make friends and invite them to participate in a project, that would be a totally different message with totally different links. ←Humus sapiens ну? 04:36, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- NOTE: Unfortunately, User:FrummerThanThou seems to have "lost it" entirely, see what he has written: "DHUH you are jew! ha! how uncool! anyways i just though i would stick that fact in YOUR face!! This template is all about that yeah!!... check out that massive star of david there, yeah!! cool isn't it?! so TOTALY superjewish!!!! oh please dont run away you confused soul! soon you will find your wiki self and i'll show the template i was realy going to welcome you with! Check history, this template used to be normal, untill it was suggested it wasnt." [3] "Hey! where you running off to!??! join our wikiproject.... hey!! come back!! join!!" [4]. This is related to another episode, a "fake vote" that he has instigated at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Orthodox Halakha. He needs to be removed from editing Wikipedia articles until such time as he can demonstrate stability. IZAK 11:19, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
