"Temporary Insanity" is the sixtieth episode of Code Lyoko.

[edit] Summary

When infected with a virus on Lyoko, Odd and Ulrich begin hallucinating, seeing and feeling the world around them as if they were on Lyoko, which results in them attacking the students and teachers at the school, believing them to be Xana's monsters. A similar effect occurs in Lyoko, where they think they're at the school! They are branded insane by the authorities, blaming the influence of video games and TV for their actions and held at a hospital, Yumi and Aelita go to break them out so Jeremie can try to remove the virus on Lyoko. But while doing that, Xana attacks the core…

[edit] Recap

While in Carthage hunting for data on Franz Hopper, two Mantas fire a combined-attack-beam at Ulrich and Odd. While it gives them a red tinge, it appears to have no ill effect on them, until they unexpectedly devirtualize.

Unconcerned by this new trick, which seems to have no lasting effects, the group return to Kadic for an open rehearsal of the school play Cyrano de Bergerac, which is being directed by Gustave Chardin.

Just before the performance starts, Delmas enquires why Chardin chose this play, citing possible artistic and personal reasons. Chardin bluntly responds that a lack of funds required a play that could reuse the set and costumes from the episode "Laughing Fit".

While rehearsing, Odd and Ulrich begin blurting out phrases which would normally be limited to Lyoko. From their point of view, they are now on Lyoko, surrounded by monsters (those students and teachers present). Specifically, Delmas is seen as a Krab and Jim as a Blok. While such behavior is clearly not part of the play, Chardin sees it as unique way of acting ("It's a cross between a bold soprano, and a deadly karate match!"). Jim restrains the two while Delmas calls for an ambulance. Realizing what has happened, Yumi and Aelita follow them to the hospital while Jeremie goes to the factory to fix what has gone awry.

At the hospital, Ulrich and Odd are placed in observation, still convinced they are on Lyoko. Their nurse is easily able to restrain them, as she is a Tenth Dan in Aikido. When Yumi and Aelita arrive at the hospital, they are refused access to the boys by the receptionist. Overhearing a conversation between a trio of doctors, they learn the room number that Ulrich and Odd are being kept in.

Outside their room, Yumi distracts the orderly guarding it by posing as a lost patient suffering from blindness. While he leads Yumi to a room she randomly names, Aelita enters the boys room and releases them from their restraints after pretending to destroy the monsters they believe to be nearby. She plays into their hallucinations in order to get them to obey her.

Meanwhile, Yumi has been escorted to a room already occupied by an older woman, who wants to play a game of Tiddlywinks, wishing to use her medicine as the anti. Yumi quickly leaves the room after angering the elderly patient, rejoins with the others, and starts making for the exit. They are stopped during their escape, but manage to get away without incident.

While heading for the factory, Yumi, Aelita, Odd and Ulrich are intercepted by a police car. Ulrich starts running toward it, believing it to be a Megatank. Just as the car is about to hit him, the driver swerves to avoid him and almost broadsides a TV van driven by Thomas Vincent, who promptly pushes a microphone in the driving officer's face and begins filming a news segment. The group continue heading for the factory.

When they arrive at the factory, Jeremie has to trick Ulrich and Odd into entering the scanners, then has Aelita and Yumi follow them. Since Xana has used this opportunity to attack Lyoko's core, Yumi is dispatched to protect it. Aelita is forced to escort Odd and Ulrich to the nearest tower, complicated by the fact that their hallucinations have persisted into Lyoko: they now believe they're in the real world. Aelita once again plays into their hallucinations in order to get them to obey her. Though a few monsters block their way, Aelita manages to get the two to the tower and Jeremie corrects the error causing their delusions.

Meanwhile, Yumi arrives in Lyoko's core to find one shield gone and three Mantas attacking the remaining one. As she fends off the Mantas, her friends make their way to the core to assist. Yumi manages to destroy two of the Mantas before being devirtualized, leaving the last one to attack the core directly. It is stopped by Aelita, who intercepts the blast with her body and destroys the Manta in turn.

Back at the rehearsal in Kadic, now being done verbatim, Chardin halts the scene, not fully satisfied by the acting. After several suggestions about what's missing, Odd suggests that "a touch of insanity" is needed, which Chardin agrees to. Everyone laughs and the episode ends on a light note.

[edit] Memorable Quotes/Scenes

  • When looking through either Odd or Ulrich's eyes, Jim appears to be a talking Blok. Several other characters are portrayed as monsters through the boys' warped perspectives.
