Telessilla of Argos

Telessilla of Argos was an Greek warrior-poet in the 5th century BC.
When the city of Argos was under siege Telessilla rallied the women of with war-hymns and chants and led them in defending the city. They managed to drive back the invaders after prolonged fighting. She then dedicated a victory hymn to the mother goddess. A temple of Aphrodite was dedicated to Telessilla.
Her example is sometimes seen as proof of the existence of the Amazons and military participation of women in classical antiquity.
