Telenor Serbia, previously named Mobtel and Mobi 63, is a Serbian mobile network operator.

[edit] The Launch of Mobtel

Originally launched in 1994 as Mobtel, the company's operation was a joint venture founded in 1994 between Moscow-based BK Trade and government-owned PTT.

First NMT network was announced on December 31, 1994. The signal covered major urban areas and highway routes - 60% Serbia's inhabited territory and 12% of Serbia's land area. This service is not commercial any more. MSISDN Network Code was 061 (international: +381 61).

GSM network is in usage from 1996.

In 2005 BK Trade sold its shares to consortium of Austrian investors (through Holdenhurst Holding headed by Martin Schlaf) and the company was renamed Mobi 063. It was purchased on July 31, 2006 by Telenor for €1.513 billion.

The Telenor Serbia have licence for GSM and UMTS/IMT2000 standards for a period of 10 years starting 31 August 2006.

The Telenor Serbia GSM signal covers 95% of Serbia's inhabited territory and 90% of Serbia's land area. Company has more than 900 active base tranceiver stations (BTS) which cover all urban and suburban areas, major highway routes, and tourist centers. It has around 2.6 million customers. The IMSI Network Code of Telenor is 220-01 and MSISDN Network Codes are 063 (international: +381 63) and 062 (international: +381 62).

Telenor Serbia GSM currently uses GSM 900/1800, GPRS, EDGE and 3G (UMTS) technologies.
