A television program(me) or television show is a segment of programming in television broadcasting. It can be a one time event, or be part of a series of programs and can be a recorded or live broadcast. The broadcasts are most often done by television stations and a program is usually bound to a certain television network or television channel.
Today advertisements are usually placed between the programs and also regurally interrupt the programs. The amount of advertisements differ greatly between channels and countries, however 15 minutes of commercials on one hour of programming is quite common. Pay-per-view channels such as HBO and Showtime often do not have any commercials at all. Similarly publicly funded television in many countries such the the United States, United Kingdom and Australia don't run advertisements, except to promote their own broadcasts. Although commercials technically are television programs, viewers generally do not tend to think of them as such.

[edit] Formats
In the early days of television most programs were broadcast live. When recording equipment started to become available, the industry started recording almost all their content in advance of the broadcast. This has the benefit of being able to do editing before doing a final broadcast. Live broadcasting is only common with (sports)events, news and talkshow programs.
Allthough one-off broadcasts do occur, they are rather rare. If they do occur they are sometimes called a television special. Most programs are part of a series of scripted or unscripted programs. If they are unscripted they are often referred to simply as "television shows", gameshows, talksshows etc. If they are scripted they are usually known as "television series". A television series that is intended to air a finite number of episodes is usually called a miniseries or serial (although the latter term also has other meanings). A single instance of a series of a program is called an episode. A television movie ("made-for-TV" movie) is a movie that is initially aired on television rather than being released in theaters or direct-to-video, although many successful television movies are later released on video.

[edit] Scripted television series
The terminology used to define a set of episodes produced by a scripted television series varies from country to country. In North America and Australia, the term used to describe a regular interval of episodes is a television season or simply, season. In the United Kingdom and a few other countries, these sets of episodes are now referred to as series (the term is used separately from "television series" which refers to a complete production). Such a season or series is usually annual, but not by definition.
