[edit] Critical mass
Hello, Tedernst. I think that any disambiguation of critical mass should have a link at the top of the nuclear critical mass article, instead of making the main page a disambiguation page. You can reply here instead of my page. -- Kjkolb 04:46, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- Before I started tonight, there was Critical mass for the nuclear one and Critical Mass for the bicylcing one which didn't seem to make sense to me. Maybe I acted too swiftly, but it seemed to make sense to me that both of those pages should redirect to the dab page, to get us away from being case sensitive. What do you think? Tedernst | talk 04:49, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
-
- I think that most people are looking for the nuclear concept when they are searching or linking "critical mass", so I would leave that page there and put something like this at the top:
- This article is about critical mass in physics, for the bicycle, see Critical Mass (or Critical Mass (bicycle) if you prefer that name).
- Would that be acceptable? -- Kjkolb 04:56, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- I think that most people are looking for the nuclear concept when they are searching or linking "critical mass", so I would leave that page there and put something like this at the top:
- That sounds fine, though I'm not sure if it's true that so many more people are looking for the nuclear use of the term. Thousands of people around the world ride in these rides every month. The name of the bike ride was borrowed from the nuclear event, however, so I could definitely be persuaded. If you're convinced that's the best course of action, please write back once more and I'll move the physics page back to critical mass. Tedernst | talk 05:00, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
-
- Most of the incoming links are for the nuclear use, so I think it's probably the best way to go, for now. We can change it later, though (I don't know about people using the search function). Most people are probably aware that the name has other uses, so some might even type "critical mass bike" or "critical mass bicycle", which should be redirected to wherever the article ends up. If they don't, it's right at the top, so I don't think it's too much of a problem. Thanks, Kjkolb 05:14, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, it's true that most inbound links to critical mass are correct for nuclear, it's equally true that inbound links to Critical Mass are correct for the bicycle event. I hate that we're case-sensitive. That makes this work much more difficult, I'd say. Tedernst | talk 05:16, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
-
-
- Yeah, the case sensitivity thing is weird. It affects searches as well as typed URLs. If I search for "critical mass" I get the nuclear one, but if I search for "Critical Mass" I get the bicycle one. Also, it would be nice if the direct links to the disambiguated pages didn't have numeric entities for parentheses. Instead of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_Mass_%28bicycle%29 (Critical_Mass_(bicycle)), it would be nice to have the URL be something like Critical_Mass_bicycle_ride. Anyway, here's a somewhat interesting Meta page about case sensitivity: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Case_sensitivity Dan Korn 07:21, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 0-0-0
lol! And I thought I was pedantic... I left those links in because I thought someone who had arrived that the 0-0-0 page might be after those pages... but no objections, none at all. I just couldn't help noticing. :-D Neonumbers 11:33, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- lol... if you must know, well, it was basically because I could kind of imagine someone typing in 0-0-0 with the hope of finding the info in one of those extra links... almost purely subjective as you can see. Anyway, I made sure links to those pages were in the actual dab-linked pages so that there'd be some path to it; they will still, I guess, lesser options. But, of course, I don't mind if those links are removed... I did debate with myself for a while when I edited the page. Anyway... no harm done. :-) Neonumbers 07:22, 17 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] 49er
To me a "dab" is "Dead and Buried" or "Dictionary of American Biography" but I guess you mean disambiguation. I think you are fouling things up and I am dismayed. Your sports team (which I never heard of) obviously took their name from the Gold Rush and you are destroying an historical connection to favor what I assume is your hobby - spectator sports. You are probably too young to have heard the song "Clementine": [1]
You can see there "forty-niner" long before any of your sports teams; they all take their name from the Gold Rush. There was a recent mission to the Moon "Clementine" and I bet half the people involved didn't kow the song. It is nice to present a historical tracing of names so I hope you will be so kind as to put some reference back to the 1849 gold rush. If you want to nit-pick about "dab"s perhaps you could link to Gold Rush - I may have seen it but thought the link I put in was more colorful, and the Gold Rush page does not have 49 or 1849 in the title. I am too old to learn all the tricks of formatting for Wikipedia but I try to help. There is some way to code the reference so that "1849 Gold Rush" shows but Gold Rush is linked - it involved a "|" symbol but I always have to experiment. I am in physics and I just probe random links late at night to tidy up things here and there, usually misspellings or unclear antecedents. But I did notice that Wynton Marsalis was missing, though Branford was in, and I added a page for Wynton. Usually when I do my best to add a page and someone sees it needs tidying, the other chap fixes it better instead of tearing it out. As to the newline - I tried for 15 minutes using the same line, but the underline omitted the first two letters inside the link until I added the newline. I think it's maybe a Wiki-Glitchi Carrionluggage 18:55, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] OK on 49ers
Thanks to you and Kusma for finding a solution. Contrary to what you suggest, I did look at all the rules for disambiguation before I put back the (sub-optimal) link and I kept it within the Encyclopedia as you had suggested, but in a casual search (including a "find" for "external") I did not see anything against using external links.
I am still not too happy because for some reason the link to the (historically) first occurrence is at the end of the list and not at the top, but I don't know all the rules. I am just disappointed when roots are lost. For example, I recently saw a crossword puzzle in a reputable newspaper where the question was "Disney deer" and the answer was "Bambi" - Felix Salton having gotten lost along the way. Carrionluggage 21:23, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- I appreciate your view and your knowledge of how this kind of encyclopedia "should" be structured (not poking fun - obviously you know the rules well). But you Wiki has many contributors, like me, who do not want that much involvement - we want to follow the obvious rules and improve the whole, but often don't have or want to find the time to get into whether some entries should be combined or split, etc. I would respectfully suggest that when you revise the section on disambiguation (dab, if you will), that you put in a request for the preparers to sort the links in an order that "makes sense." For a name - it is in the order of time (or source) sequence, I'd think. I just fixed up Wreck of the Hesperus to include reference to Longfellow, who'd been left out. (OOPs now I see that there are 2 entries, Wreck of the Hesperus and The Wreck of the Hesperus. I may try to fix what I did so as to link within Wiki - sorry - who would know that a "doom metal band" had taken all but the first word of Longfellow's poem?!) I did not fix up a "dab" page for The Wreck of the Hesperus although maybe I should have. I leave it to devotees of WikiStructure or even bots to do things like that. Now back to an order that "makes sense". When time sequence or sequence in order of appearance isn't right, perhaps frequency of use would work. Look at the mess (I just did) for Group. Historically and in frequency of use, the sociology one is probably first. The others are hard to sort, and the one on galaxies is confused. The link should have one of those | things in it, lest people mix up groups (perhaps 3 to 50 galaxies) and clusters of galaxies (many hundreds, or even more than a thousand.) Anyway, somebody in Wikipedia might take a look at how dab entries should be ordered and set up some standard. Back to your work - you may find I missed the ban on external links. Carrionluggage 23:07, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] more bad disambiguation
I did some fixes on disambiguation for Group but found that there is no entry I can find for our own Galaxy (within disambiguation on Galaxy) so I commented the talk page for it with words sort of adapted from Marx and Engels. Carrionluggage 23:19, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Good job on the disambig pages
We bumped into each other on The Man in Black a few weeks ago. Whenever I've come across a horrible disambig page since that I have been too scared to cleanup myself - I've marked it with disambig-cleanup and watched you hammer it into a sensible disambig page.
Keep up the good work ! Megapixie 03:52, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- I second this. Whenever I'm too scared, I step back and let a vicous, dab-reducing agent do my dirty work. Thanks, Well done. I award you the WikiMedal for Janitorial Services. Josh Parris#: 04:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'll echo too - I cleanup roughly half the dab's I come across myself, and the other half get tagged for cleanup... and you do the cleanup on a fair set of them. Thanks/wangi 08:35, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

I dunno, I think I imagined there were too many trees or something (I -wikied it as you may have noticed). I'm happy to leave it as is, and I've pulled the cleanup tag. Josh Parris#: 04:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Relating to New Mobility Agenda and its multiple extentions
How can I send a simple one line note when I wish to thank you for your guidance, which is not always that easy I recognise. ericbritton 20:50, 21 December 2005 (UTC)
The Bigger Picture: Excellent. Now that I know how to have your attention the first point I should make is that I shall try not to abuse. However, what we are doing here – not just the fine detail and the entries but the greater whole that is behind it – is to take advantage of this opportunity to synergize (awful word) with the entire Wikipedia concept in order to do the job that we have chosen to do in these various areas of technology, society and collaborative problem solving. Something that we have been at in our own way for a couple of decades now. (You can see the broad lines of this at The Commons: Open Society Sustainability Initiative at www.ecoplan.org and a bit more at [– New Ways to Work in an Information Society]. For your information, we call these “invisible colleges”.)
Okay, now here’s my question. It concerns for now solely the growing entry under the New Mobility Agenda It is important for us as representatives and in our way servants of the thousand plus concerned citizens, experts and groups around the world that participate in this independent semi-chaotic group effort, to be able to give evidence of the dynamics and variety of these concepts. As well as of the multiplicity of the people who routinely get involved in this kind of collaborative problem solving.
May I have your permission to set up a linked “Discuss and comment” page, rather along the lines of an open and this case linked blog, so that anyone who wanders into this entry will be able to see for themselves something about all this variety and dynamics. As well as get a better idea of the people and groups who are in the trenches on this.
If you agree, I would like to cobble in a quick provisional entry, which we can then fine tune and eventually expand to make it a valuable companion piece for this entry. IN any event thanks for your patience and your good counsel. Indeed, I find the collegial tone one of the great qualities of your exercise here. ericbritton 12:47, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Yes, I kind of understood that you are a member of the community. That said, before I put my big pen in my mouth about that a linked “Discuss and comment” page I thought I might at least test the water with you? ericbritton 15:40, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned category
I've been going through Special:Uncategorizedcategories, and I notice you removed Category:Disambiguated phrases from its parent categories. If you think it's not needed, could you either nominate it at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion, or for speedy deletion using the {{db}} template, whichever is appropriate? I'd take care of it, but I'm not really sure what needs to be done. Let me know if you have questions or need help. Thanks, SCZenz 01:19, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] link on sig, difficulty in reaching me, 20 weeks
To remove the link from your signature go to "my preferences" and check the box that says "raw signature".
As for making it more difficult for people to talk to me, it makes it more difficult for people to page me; you can talk to me via the talk pages on articles that I post items to as I do watch such pages (including this one now, but I don't watch user talk pages for more than a month or two at a time).
As for "20 week break", I mean for that article, not for Wikipedia as a whole.

Thanks! Sorry about the tag removal issue - it didn't occur to me that the disambig-cleanup tags were in lieu of (rather than in addition to) the standard {{disambig}} tag. The one bear I saw on the list was Anderson. Is there precedent for subdividing a dab page? It's so long that it's difficult to navigate. | Klaw ¡digame! 17:05, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Protocols
I'm curious as to whether you even looked at my reasoning for leaving the term Medical Protocol intact before you changed the page. Medical protocols, as used by groups such as Paramedics, are much more strict than guidelines (such as the AHA's ACLS guidelines). As a matter of fact, in some places, prehospital protocols have the force of law. Until the 80's, the Maryland legislature voted on changes to the prehospital medical protocols, and they are still enforced under COMAR (see the link I put on the protocols talk page. --catseyes 04:37, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Roman
If you have a moment, could you pop over to the Roman dab page and let me know if you think I went too far in my cleanup efforts? Two other editors have argued, in essence, that I shouldn't have deleted any links at all, including redlinks, but one has a history of reverting any changes to the page. I could use an outside opinion on this one. Thanks. | Klaw ¡digame! 14:17, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] "alternative dab templates deprecated"
I don't know of a citation, it's just the vibe I have. I know (from various discussions) that most of the experienced disambiguators think alternative templates are a bad idea. Since the discussions happend in various places there isn't a central thing to cite. What we need to do is formalise the guideline. I guess we could do that at WP:MOSDAB, just start a discussion where everyone votes. I'm too lazy to start that discussion, but would welcome anyone who would.--Commander Keane 20:15, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Russian districts
Hi, Tedernst! Thanks for your efforts to remove piping according to MoS—I was too lazy to do it today myself. Please note, however, that you are also removing the geodis designation replacing it back with disambig. It took me a good chunk of today's morning to put it in, so here's my reaction—GAAAHHH :)))—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 21:27, 30 December 2005 (UTC)
Do you mind to ask for it to be deleted first and delete all references to it then? It may very well be eventually deleted, but, IMO, it's just impolite to automatically assume it will be. I, for one, can see how this template can be useful. If most other editors are going to disagree with me, then so be it—I'll comply—but let's at least discuss it first!—Ëzhiki (erinaceus amurensis) 21:34, 30 December 2005 (UTC)

I have pasted in my new proposal at WP:DAB (here), I'd love to hear your opinions, either here on the talk page there.
William really buggered things up (as you noticed and first pointed out, it took me a couple of days to realise and jump into action). The new proposal (or a variant) will hopefully fix up the mess of dab page templates and categories.
Unfortunatly William can't understand what he's done wrong and now wants me to leave Wikipedia until I graduate (which is just over a year). I'm trying to sort that out on his talk page.
William has been constantly attacking you (and now teenagers apparently, lucky I had a birthday a couple of months ago :) ), if you would like to take up dispute resolution against him let me know - he is out of line and heavily disrupting talk pages (as well as the damage he's already done in implementing his new system for dab pages). [edit] WikiIndex message
Thank you for the message.
As I've visited various Wikis, as well as various message boards and social-interaction websites (e.g. slashdot, etc.), I have been registering my user name BlankVerse, mostly as a preemptive strike. I've been surprised that in most cases the user name has been available. My biggest failure so far is that I haven't been able to find a good free blog website where the user name was available (it's also unavailable as .com, .net, .org, and .info domain names, so I'd have to settle for blankverse.us or something similar).
At least for any MediaWiki-based Wiki, I've usually entered a link back to my Wikipedia user page and looked to see what sort of welcome template they had (if they had one). When they haven't had a welcome template, I've always added the same slightly snarky note in the edit summary. You're the first person who has ever responded to that note.
Since WikiIndex was not in the interwiki map at Meta, I've put in a request for it to be added (see meta:Talk:Interwiki map#New to Add).
If I end up spending more time at WikiIndex, I'll probably help create a welcome template. On the other hand, I have been dissatisfied with the Wikipedia welcome message, but I haven't yet figured out what I would do if I created my own version of the welcome message (other than it definitely will not be a colored box like so many of the personalized welcome messages). In the past you have edited Little Italy, Chicago. This week it has been selected as the WikiProject Chicago Collaboration of the week. Each week a Chicago related article in need of attention is selected as the Chicago COTW. Feel free to come help us improve it towards the quality level of a Wikipedia featured article. Your input in future selections would also be appreciated. See the To Do List to suggest a change or to see an open tasks list.

[edit] New WikiProject Illinois Collaboration Division
Hey, saw you were a participant in the Illinois WikiProject. I thought I would let you know that there is a new Collaboration Division up for the project. The goal of the division is to select an article or articles for improvement to Good article standard or higher. There is a simple nomination process, which you can check out on the division subpage, to make sure each candidate for collaboration has enough interested editors. This is a good way to get a lot of articles to a quality status quickly. Please consider participating. More details can be seen at the division subpage. IvoShandor 11:23, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
