[edit] Summary

Milly and Tamiya are doing a report on the school prom. They try to interview Sissi, who was prom queen last year, but she turns them down and makes fun of their age, saying they'll never get a date. Milly tries to ask Ulrich out, and he is forced to turn her down. Upset, Milly storms off. In her room, she tells Tamiya that she hates everyone, with Xana listening from her computer. When Milly tells her teddy bear that she wishes she were bigger and leaves it in the garden shed, Xana possesses it and uses it to attack those who had made fun of her. It then increases the teddy bear's size to roughly two stories and sets it on the town. Now the group has to shut down the tower and protect the rest of the town from a rampaging teddy bear.

[edit] Recap

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The episode begins in the gym. Milly and Tamiya are doing a report on the annual school prom. They aren't allowed in the gym, so they're filming from the waiting room. When Sissi comes out, they try to interview her, since she was last year's prom queen. Sissi, however, is not willing to let them, since she only talks to real reporters. Milly asks her about freedom of the press, to which she responds by saying that children Milly's age have no freedom. She then goes on to point out that Milly needs a date for the prom, and doubts her ability to get one. Upset, Milly tries to ask Ulrich out. Ulrich is forced to turn her down due to their age difference and the fact that he already promised to go with Yumi. Sissi makes fun of Milly for getting turned down, and Milly runs away crying. Tamiya tries to catch her. After they leave, Yumi scolds Sissi for her actions.

In Jeremie's room, Jeremie is trying to contact Aelita. She responds after a short wait. After some small talk, Jeremie mentions that he's making progress with his research so Aelita can live on Earth. She is excited by the news, thinking that Jeremie has finally found the key to materialization. He hasn't, of course, and says so, but also says that he's making progress. Once he finally does, they can end Xana's threat to both her and the rest of the world.

In Milly and Tamiya's room, Tamiya is trying to cheer Milly up. It doesn't work. Milly thinks that they (the older kids) don't care about them or the news cast. She then says she hates them, reiterating the sentiment several times. During this, Xana is watching from her computer. Tamiya says that Milly doesn't know what she's talking about, but Milly just says that she's tired of her too. She then runs off with her teddy bear in hand. After she's gone, Tamiya comments that Ulrich could have been a little nicer.

In the gym, Ulrich is taping down various wires. Yumi tells him not to look so gloomy, wondering if he looks so because of Milly. She then suggests that he could have said yes. Ulrich comments on Sissi's earlier attitude, saying that if meanness is one of the qualities of a beauty queen, she'll be re-elected for sure. Jeremie says they'll never convince "Miss World" of that. Odd, who's by a microphone, says that "Miss In-her-own-world" is more like it. His comment is repeated over the speaker system, angering Sissi.

In the garden shed, Milly is confiding in her teddy bear. She's still unhappy with everyone older than her. She eventually says that if they were older than the others, they wouldn't laugh at her anymore. The light in the shed begins to flicker after she says this. Tamiya then knocks on the window, looking for Milly and saying that they have work to do. Hearing Tamiya, Milly leaves her teddy bear leaning on a box and goes with her. After the two leave, the light flickers once again. This time, one of Xana's ghosts comes from it and possesses the bear. Outside of the shed, a roar can be heard.

In the dorms, Sissi is walking to her room with Hervé and Nicolas. When she reachs her room, she tells the two of them to go away. Hervé tries to tell her something, but only gets to "We thought" before Sissi interrupts him, telling them both not to think because it doesn't suit them. She then slams the door on them. After they're gone, she sits on her bed and kicks off her shoes. Under her bed, Xana is watching. As she changes, Sissi starts complaining about having little kids at the prom (she calls them "babies"). All the while, Xana is still watching, as well as moving about the room. Sissi notices when Xana runs into a trash can, but can't find the source of the disturbance. Ignoring it, she starts to apply a facial mask. Another disturbance catches her attention, this one on the top shelf. This time, several bottles are knocked over, scaring Sissi out of the room.

Outside of the dorms, a small crowd has gathered. The principal escorts Sissi outside, telling everyone to go back to their dorms. Milly and Tamiya are there, fairly pleased about the chance to report on the story, which they call a "super scoop". They take a picture of Sissi for the paper. As the principal escorts Sissi away from the dorms, Odd suggests that they check Sissi's room to see if Xana was behind the incident.

In Sissi's room, the overall state of the room is much worse than it was previously. Almost everything is broken, and even the closets are dented in. Jeremie is convinced that a simple short circuit is responsible. The others agree with this assessment. As they walk away, Milly and Tamiya walk in to take pictures.

In the garden shed, Milly and Tamiya arrive to find Milly's teddy bear missing. At the same time, Jim catches them walking in, and tells them that the shed is off-limits because they could get hurt. He leads them out and locks it so they can't get back in. Jim then tells them that it's only for adults. Milly's still upset over being treated like a little kid, and voices her displeasure. Jim suggests that she change her attitude. When she continues, he forbids both her and Tamiya from going to the prom.

In front of the dorms, Tamiya is trying to cheer Milly up once again, this time using the pictures they took of Sissi and her room. Odd comes up to ask what's wrong. Tamiya tells him about Milly's missing teddy bear, and Milly thinks one of the big kids took it out of spite. Tamiya, who's still going through the pictures, confirms this. One of the pictures of Sissi's room shows Milly's teddy bear hidden under a pillow. Milly wants to go get it, but Tamiya reminds her that Jim will be angry if he catches them there. Odd offers to go in their place, taking the picture with him.

In another part of the school, Jim is just about to enter a builing. The shadow of Milly's teddy bear covers the wall, covering a far wider area than it should be. Jim turns around to see the giant teddy bear, then tries to act dangerous by saying he's a black belt. It just roars at him. Jim then screams as he's attacked. Back at the dorms, Odd finds no trace of the teddy bear in Sissi's room.

In the infirmary, Jim is describing his attacker to the principal. He's drawn a crude picture of the teddy bear as an example and claims that it was an expert in martial arts. Of course, a giant teddy bear fluent in martial arts doesn't seem that plausible, so the principal doesn't believe him.

In the gym, Jeremie is having second thoughts about his earlier assessment of Sissi's room. Ulrich isn't convinced. Yumi tells them to keep it cool since the walls have ears, referring to Hervé and Nicolas. After they walk off, Yumi says that she has to go home and get ready for the prom. She then says that being a day student can be a drag. Ulrich tell her not to complain since no one wakes her up at six A.M., she has hot water, and she doesn't have to sleep next to Odd.

At the infirmary, the principal is just walking out with Jim's picture. Odd is there, and asks if they know who attacked Jim. The principal says that Jim just needs rest and throws away the picture. After he leaves, Odd gets the picture out of the trash.

Near the dorms, Odd shows Jeremie and Ulrich the picture. They realize that Xana must have possessed it. Odd asks who's going to go to Lyoko and who's going to stay at the school. Jeremie says that a solo mission is too dangerous, but Odd volunteers anyway. Jeremie mockingly asks if Odd heard him. Odd defends himself by saying that they can't leave the school unguarded and that it'll be all over if there's an accident. Ulrich agrees with Odd, and volunteers to stay. He tells Jeremie to say hello to Aelita for him.

At the factory, Jeremie contacts Aelita and tells her that Odd is coming over by himself. As he prepares to send Odd to Lyoko's Desert sector, he calls Ulrich to see how things are going. By this point, the teddy bear has grown much larger. Its footprints are roughly four feet wide. Finishing up the transfer process, Jeremie sends Odd to Lyoko. Ulrich calls Jeremie again, warning him that the teddy bear has now escaped the school. Aelita comments that the teddy bear will likely go after Xana's mortal enemies. Ulrich realizes that it must be going after Yumi and runs off to get to her before it does.

On Lyoko, Aelita and Odd are by a large pit with a circular ramp along the wall. Aelita is sure that the tower must be close. Since it's not in the pit, she figures it must be on a neighboring plateau. Before they can continue exploring, five Kankrelats confront them. Jeremie tells Odd to take care of Aelita.

In town, Ulrich is running towards Yumi's house. Every street light and car along the way is tipped over, meaning that the teddy bear has already passed by. He tries to call Yumi, but she's bathing at the moment.

On Lyoko, Odd is trying to hold off the Kankrelats. He manages to destroy one before being hit. Aelita flees down the ramp in the pit during this. Jeremie warns Odd about his life points as he follows. As Aelita says that they have no choice but to follow it, Odd gets a vision of Aelita falling into the digital void. They continue to run down the ramp as the Kankrelats fire on them.

At Yumi's house, Ulrich is frantically ringing the doorbell. Yumi is just getting out of the bathtub at this point. Once she gets dressed, she heads down to get the door. Ulrich runs inside as soon as she opens the door, clearly worried. After asking if her parents are home, he drags her out of the house. When she asks him to explain, they feel the tremors from the approaching teddy bear. Ulrich says that they don't have time and they run away.

On Lyoko, Aelita and Odd are still fleeing the Kankrelats. Odd manages to destroy three more, causing the last one to trip and fall off the edge. This, in turn, causes Aelita to lose her balance and begin falling into the void. Luckily, Odd is able to jump down and save her by clinging to the wall with his claws. When they finally come to a stop, they end up in front of a tunnel.

In town, Ulrich and Yumi are being chased by the teddy bear. They manage to lose it by hiding inside a building. After it loses track of them, it continues toward the school. Ulrich calls Jeremie and tells him that they're going to evacuate the school.

In the tunnel on Lyoko, Aelita and Odd are following the pulsing wires to the tower. Hearing a noise, they turn around to see a Megatank rolling down the tunnel towards them. They run as the Megatank rapidly closes on them. They manage to make it out of the tunnel just as the Megatank is about to hit them, allowing them to dodge at the last minute. It runs into the tower. As Odd gets up to face the Megatank, it straightens itself and prepares to attack. Jeremie warns Odd that he can't let the Megatank hit him because he only has fifty life points left. As Odd aims, the Megatank opens up to attack.

At the school, Ulrich and Yumi split up to evacuate the dorms and the gym. Ulrich goes to the gym. There, he runs into Jim, who comments on his attire. He then runs into Sissi, who notices that Yumi isn't with him. The principal then announces that it's time for the prom queen to be elected.

On Lyoko, Odd dodges the Megatank's elliptical laser. Before he can counter-attack, it fires again. Aelita thinks that Odd's not going to make it, but Jeremie thinks he will. He then tells Odd that he has to hit the target as the Megatank recharges its weapon.

In the gym, Ulrich interrupts the prom queen election to tell everyone about the giant teddy bear. With the exception of Jim, they don't believe him. Sissi gets angry over the claim, thinking that Ulrich is trying to keep her from winning again this year. Just then, the teddy bear smashes through the wall, scaring away all the students and faculty. It immediately turns its attention to Ulrich.

On Lyoko, Odd is still fighting with the Megatank. When it fires again, Odd jumps onto it and fires an arrow into the Eye on its support ring, destroying it. With the Megatank destroyed, Aelita enters the tower. As she heads to the top to deactivate it, Ulrich is almost crushed by the teddy bear. He dodges the attack, but it manages to knock him out with a second strike. As it tries to crush him again, Aelita deactives the tower, stopping it cold. Yumi runs in and gives him a hug as the return trip activates.

Back in time, Milly asks Ulrich out once again. This time, however, Ulrich accepts. Yumi is okay with it, since Odd is taking her to the prom. This confuses Sissi, who can't believe that Ulrich is taking Milly. Ulrich tells her that he might take her if her brain grows another neuron, making her mad. Tamiya is recording the entire scene, which both think will be a super scoop.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Memorable Quotes

Sissi: Ulrich, you're gonna go with that--that silly baby?
Ulrich: That's right, I sure am, but don't worry. When your brain gets another neuron or two, maybe I'll go out with you, too.
Yumi: Well, I've gotta go now and get ready for the prom tonight. Sometimes being a day student can be a total drag.
Ulrich: Don't complain. No one wakes you at 6am, you have hot water, and you don't have to sleep next to smelly Odd.
(The team is planning how to handle this attack)
Odd: Okay, guys! Who goes and who stays here?
Jeremie: We can’t have a solo mission. It’s too dangerous without Yumi. If you go alone, you never know what you’re gonna find over there.
Odd: I volunteer!
Jeremie: What did I just say, huh?
Milly: Ulrich, will you...umm...go out with me?
Ulrich: I'mm...sorry, I'm going...with Yumi.

(Milly starts crying)

Tamiya: Milly, Wait!!!
Ulrich: If meanness is one of the qualities of a beauty queen, then she'll get re-elected all right!
Jeremie: That's true, but try getting "Miss World" to see that.
Odd: Miss World, eh? (talks into microphone) Miss In Her Own World is more like it!
(First lines of the show)
Milly: O.K., are we rolling?
Tamiya: (giggles) Yeah, but we're upside down!
Yumi: (to Ulrich) Are you ok?

(Ulrich blushes)

Odd: Just let me say hello to an old buddy of mine.
Jeremie: Cut the courtesy Odd, you only have 50 life points left.
(After the Megatank fires its first shot)
Odd: Talk about a warm welcome.
(Yumi comes over a hugs Ulrich)
Ulrich: Ready for a trip into the past, Yumi?
Jeremie: Odd, hurry up, Teddy's getting really angry.

[edit] Trivia

[edit] Cinematic Notes

  • Jim is shown putting a padlock on the Garden Shed door. Immediately afterward, the edge of the door is in plain view. There is a mortise lock in the door, but neither a padlock nor any device used with a padlock (i.e. latch, hasp and staple, chain, etc.) is to be seen anywhere on the door.
  • Odd's arrows look different in this episode than in later episodes. Here, they look like regular arrows shot from a bow. Later on, they are nothing but simple arrowheads.
  • When Odd attacks the Megatank, he yells "IMPACT!" not "LASER ARROW!". Impact is Ulrich's attack, not Odd's.
  • Odd's voice is different in this episode (and the following three) because they had previously hired a different voice actor. The same goes with Sissi.
  • In this episode and many other early episodes of the English version, Odd says "Laser Flash!", while "Laser Arrow!" is used for the remainder of the series.
  • When Jeremie is selecting Odd's Lyoko card, there are no cards for Yumi and Ulrich.
  • The face cream that Sissi was wearing wasn't on her face when she fell to the ground, but when she was shown back outside it was back on.
  • The unactivated towers seen in the background of the Desert sector in this episode don't have any auras.
  • In one scene where Odd talks to Milly and Tamiya, his pants legs are the same color. They change back to having two different colors in the next shot.
  • When the tower is deactivated, the teddy bear stops attacking, but the Eye of Xana is still seen in its eyes.
  • This is the first time that Odd and Aelita's Lyoko form is seen.

[edit] Culture Notes

  • One of the cars damaged by the Teddygozilla is clearly identifiable as a Mercedes-Benz A-Class, both by its distinctive shape (the car was not crushed) and by the Mercedes symbol on each of the visible hubcaps.
