Ted Carroll (born 1939) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with Kilkenny in the 1960s.
Ted Carroll was born in Kilkenny in 1939. He was educated locally and later at St. Kieran's College in Kilkenny, a famed hurling nursery. It was here that his hurling skills were nurtured and developed, and he won an All-Ireland Colleges medal with the school in [[1957]. By this stage Carroll was playing minor hurling with Kilkenny. He played in the All-Ireland finals of 1956 and 1957 but ended up on the losing side on both occasions. Four years later in 1961 Carroll made his senior debut with Kilkenny, however, it was Dublin and Wexford who were the dominant teams in Leinster at the time.
In 1963 Carroll won his first Leinster title. It was subsequently converted into his first All-Ireland medal, following a victory over Waterford. In 1964 Carroll captured his second Leinster medal, however, Tipperary accounted for Kilkenny in the All-Ireland final. In 1965 Carroll had success at inter-provincial level when won a Railway Cup medal with Leinster. 1966 began well for Carroll when he won his sole National Hurling League title. More success followed later that summer when he captured his third Leinster medal. In the All-Ireland final Kilkenny were the red-hot favourites to win, however, a very young Cork team had an emphatic victory over the Leinster men.
In 1967 Carroll was switched from centre-back to right corner-back on the Kilkenny team. He later won his fourth Leinster medal, as well as his second All-Ireland medal following a win over Tipperary. Two years later he won yeat another provincial title before claiming his third All-Ireland medal following a win over Cork in the final. His excellent performance throughout the championship earned Carroll the accolade of Texaco Hurler of the Year. In 1971 he won his fifth and final Leinster title, however, in a high-scoring All-Ireland final Tipperary emerged victorious by 3-points. Carroll retired from inter-county hurling following this game.
