[edit] Boxing career

Lewis turned pro in 1909, and became the World Welterweight champion in 1915 after beating Jack Britton.

He defended the title six times, before losing the belt in a fourth fight with Britton in 1916.

He won the belt back from Britton in 1917, and held onto the title until losing the belt to Britton again in 1919 via 9th round KO.

Lewis is generally credited with being the first fighter to use a mouthpiece; at the very least he was the first notable fighter to use one.

[edit] Hall of Fame

Lewis was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

[edit] Miscellaneous

Lewis is the brother of boxer Lou (Kid) Lewis.

Lewis was also in charge of the Youth League of Oswald Moseley's 'New Party', the less extreme forerunner to his anti-semitic British Union of Fascists.
