Tecmar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tecmar was an American manufacturer of PC enhancement products based in the suburbs of Cleveland, OH. The company was founded in 1974 and their first products were data acquisition boards for the first generation of microcomputers. A popular product was the LabMaster board. After the introduction of the IBM PC in 1981, Tecmar started producing memory expansion boards, computer video related products and tape drives. In 1985, Tecmar started using the brand Scientific Solutions for its data acquisition products to differentiate them from the other products which were not specifically marketed to the scientific community. The following year, in 1986, Tecmar was acquired by the technology holding company Rexon.

As part of Rexon, the Scientific Solutions brand was mostly unchanged, but the Tecmar brand became more closely associated with tape drives. This was solidified in 1991 when Rexon purchased two other tape drive manufacturers, WangTek and WangDAT. Rexon went backrupt in 1995 and sold the Tecmar brand and all tape assets to Legacy Storage Systems. Additionally, Scientific Solutions was spun off as an independent company focused on the original Tecmar product line of data acquisition equipment. Three years later, in 1998, Tecmar was sold to a new holding company, TTI, which positioned Tecmar as a comprehensive magnetic tape data storage brand. This was reinforced in 1999 when Iomega sold their Ditto brand to Tecmar. At this time, Tecmar offered DAT, QIC, Travan and Ditto magnetic tape technologies. In 2000, Overland Data saw this and acquired Tecmar in an effort to compliment its line of higher end tape products. This did not last long.

As of 2007, Tecmar is a dormant [1] brand owned by Overland and Scientific Solutions is an active [2] corporation.
