Technical education in Japan

Western-style technical education in Japan began in earnest in the Meiji period with the founding of the British-dominated Imperial College of Engineering. In the modern day it is carried on in the engineering faculty of Tokyo University and other engineering faculties of public and private universities nationwide.
There are also a number of Institutes of Technology such as Tokyo Institute of Technology, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Nagoya Institute of Technology, Osaka Institute of Technology and others. Most of the institutes are national universities, although Kanazawa Institute of Technology is private.
