Six perfectly formed, pink pearls, the Tears of All Oceans were the most valuable possessions of the otters of Holt Lutra, on the coast of Mossflower country. Under the orders of Ublaz Mad-Eyes, a ship of pirates sailed in and destroyed the Holt, stealing the Pearls and preparing to return to Ublaz's keep. Unfortunately for the insane Emperor, the Pearls were stolen by a pair of pirates.

After traveling together for some time, the two got into an argument and fought, one dying and the other receiving a lethal wound. Still carrying the Tears, he made his way to Redwall Abbey, where he was taken care of. Finally, his wound drove him to insanity, and he departed, leaving the Tears in the keeping of his only friend at Redwall, Fermald the Ancient.

Fermald, seeking to safeguard the Tears, hid them in various locations around the Abbey, leaving riddles that detailed their locations. These clues were followed by future Abbess Tansy and several of her friends, including future Abbey Champion Arven. After much trial and tribulation, they were all found. Seeking to use them to pay for the safe return of their Abbot, who had been abducted by Ublaz's forces, they took the Tears to the sea.

Upon arriving, the Redwallers met up with their rescued Abbot and those who saved him. Tansy, seeking to prevent them from falling into evil hands, and to avoid any more bloodshed because of them, hurled them into the sea. The Abbot then revealed that Martin the Warrior had told him in a dream that she who held the Tears and cast them away would become Abbess of Redwall.
