[edit] The Teaching Awards Trust
The Teaching Awards were established by Lord Puttnam CBE in 1998 and are managed by an independent charity, the Teaching Awards Trust. The Teaching Awards Trust aims to celebrate excellence and promote best practice in education.
[edit] Aims of the Teaching Awards Trust
The Teaching Awards Trust was initially established to regenerate national pride in the teaching profession. The Trust has been successful in achieving this aim and has repositioned itself as a centre of excellence in education with the following aims:
- promote teaching as a career
- disseminate best practice
- encourage the involvement of other stakeholders in education
- engage with a wider audience at a national level
[edit] Profile
The Awards are supported by all the main political parties, the Department for Education and Skills in England, the Department of Education in Northern Ireland and the Welsh Assembly Government as well as all the national teaching unions and associations. The Trust is dedicated to ensuring the Awards are a UK-wide celebration of excellence in education and that as many schools as possible are involved with the scheme. The Trust is now working with the Scottish Executive to ensure that schools in Scotland have the opportunity to participate in the Awards.
The Teaching Awards Trust works in partnership with the BBC. Regional Ceremonies are covered by local BBC news stations. The Teaching Awards National Ceremony is a produced in conjunction with the BBC and is shown on BBC2 in a primetime slot as a showcase of excellence in education.
[edit] Funding
The Teaching Awards are funded through sponsorship, donations and grants. Sponsors of the Teaching Awards 2007 include BT, the Guardian, the DfES Innovation Unit, Promethean, the RAF and the Training and Development Agency.
[edit] The Process
Every year, all 29,000 schools across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are invited to nominate their most outstanding headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants and governors. Anyone – parents, pupils, colleagues, governors – can make a nomination online at www.teachingawards.com. Nominations must then be endorsed by the senior management team to proceed to the next stage.
