[edit] Synopsis

What seems to be a normal day at school for the kids is marked by an unusual and worrying tendency to act as teachers' pets. The reason? Every child in Miss Grotke's class is hoping that he or she will get a chance to carry a report to the staffroom, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of what's inside, a secret kept closely guarded from even the oldest students. Many have had a chance in their younger days, but made fatal mistakes in their nervousness, so the inside of the teachers' room remains a mystery.

Unfortunately, the kids' hopes are dashed by the arrival of another teacher, who suggests that she can carry the report to the staffroom and save Miss Grotke's class the bother. With lessons over for the first period, the kids mournfully reflect on what they might have found inside. Spinelli is of the opinion that the staff must be going through daily training in order to face the school routine each day; Mikey cherishes the hope that they might be trying to achieve spiritual enlightenment, while Gretchen wonders if they aren't engaged in cutting-edge research.

Eventually, the speculation is too much. The kids decide that the battle must be won, and work out a simple, yet beautiful plan, which involves telling the staffroom's most permanent occupant-- Mr. Yamashiro-- to inform another teacher that "her lime-green convertible is on fire." The response: "She's not here, and even if she were, she does not own a lime-green convertible. (Pause) I DO!" Mr. Yamashiro is lured out of the staffroom, leaving the door unlocked.

The kids enter triumphantly, only to find a completely bare room, empty save for a coffee dispenser. Resolving to tell no-one of this heartbreaking disappointment, they leave, barely missing a very annoyed Mr. Yamashiro who naturally found his car in one undamaged piece. Sighing in frustration, he enters the staffroom, and presses a button on the coffee dispenser... which opens a door to a much larger room, where it's implied that all the kids' daydreams and far more are realised...
