[edit] Plot summary
While studying at a university in the U.S., John Paul Wiggin attends a class taught by Theresa Brown on Human Communities. When John Paul realizes that she is smarter than him (a rare occurrence), he falls in love with her.
They realize that with their combined knowledge, they could accomplish quite a lot in their world. They both feel the oppressive boot of the Hegemon upon them: John Paul for his non-compliant Catholic family; Theresa for her retired non-compliant legendary military theorist father, Admiral Brown.
