Tayseer Allouni

Tayseer Allouni is a jailed journalist from the Al Jazeera news channel. He was born in Deir ez-Zor in Syria in 1955 then in 1983 he moved to Spain where he studied Economics, and has lived there ever since, adopting Spanish citizenship in 1988.

The spelling above is used in many places, though Taysir and Alluni are also acceptable. In its July 15, 2006 feature and interview (page W1), the Financial Times spelled his name Tayseer Alony Kate.

Highlights of his career include
- working as a correspondent for Al-Jazeera in Afghanistan - he was the only international correspondent in Kabul in October 2001.
- interviewing Osama bin Laden
- being deported from Iraq prior to the overthrow of Saddam Hussein
- being arrested in Spain while investigating the railway bombings
- sentenced by Audiencia Nacional of Spain on September, 26 2005 to seven years in prison for being a financial courier for Al-Qaeda. Allouni defends himself by saying that he merely interviewed Bin Laden after the September 11th attack on the United States.
- Set free on 6 October 2006 under home detention due to his medical condition[1].
