Taurano

Taurano is a town (commune) in the province of Avellino, Campania, Italy.

Taurano, whose etymologic origin is inquired in the gentilian Taurius or in the surname Taurus, is an ancien Samnite oppium, destroyed by Silla during the Social War. In Taurano territory, on the present inhabite place some remains of the Bronze Age have been found. In the Roman Age it becomes a summer resort, of this period are two villas partially come to the light, one in locality Torre and the other in S. Giovanni in Palco. In the Middle Age it is a part of Feud of Lauro. The mountain territory during the period marked by the barbaric invasion has been a refuge for populations of the whole valley. Taurano, as the entire Lauro Valley, is united to the area of Terra di Lavoro in the administrative department made by Murat. In the last century it has offered hospitality to anti Bourbon conspirators, Frate Angelo Peluso, and to bandits, Frate Diavolo. Beginning from the post-unitarian period, Taurano become an autonomous Commune except for a brief interruption, is part of the Provincia di Avellino.
