Tarzan and the Mermaids

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948), directed by Robert Florey, was the last installment in a series of Tarzan movies based on the character created by novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs, starring Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan, a man raised in the African jungle by gorillas. After this film Weismuller turned the character over to Lex Barker. Brenda Joyce plays Jane and George Zucco portrays Palanth, a High Priest attempting to force a young girl (Linda Christian) to marry a con man impersonating the god Balu. Although the film ( shot in Mexico) looks good and is not as studio-bound as some others in the series, it is still a pretty juvenile adventure. It also features a terrible new character name Benji(John Laurenz) who sings a lot of very bad songs. Another odd aspect of the film is the complete lack of black Africans in a film set in Africa.
