Tarrasque was a thrash metal band based in Portsmouth, UK. Their original line-up was Steve Harsley and Wak on guitar, Alan Carson on bass, Dave Ware on drums and Rich Stevens on vocals.

They recorded three demos with this line-up between 1989 and 1991: Tarrasque; The Reawakening and In Possession. The Reawakening was used from 1990 as background music for The Headbangers Ball on MTV Europe and Asia. In 1991 Tarrasque recorded the new theme-tune and musical inserts for the programme. This music was regularly on air, going out every week to over 50 million homes until the programme was axed in 1995. MTV aired a Tarrasque interview with Vanessa Warwick at The Bulldog Bash motorbike festival in 1992. They also filmed their live show and broadcast a song from it. However, despite this and despite receiving international radio airplay and consistently good reviews from Rock magazines such as Kerrang!, and Metal Hammer, the band remained unsigned.

In 1992 Paul Nicholas replaced Dave Ware and Rich Stevens took over from Alan Carson on bass; this is the line-up that recorded their self-financed debut album Eggshell Staircase.

Although clearly a thrash metal album, Eggshell Staircase contains a wide array of influences across several genres such as psychedelia and progressive rock. Tarrasque labelled their genre Techno Head Metal. Eggshell Staircase is far more accomplished musically than their demos or MTV work and can be considered the definitive Tarrasque recording.

After the CD's release the band were on the verge of signing a recording contract when Paul Nicholas quit. He was briefly replaced by Rob Leach, but it was the beginning of the end and the band finally split in 1993.

Most members of Tarrasque are still writing, performing and recording music today.
