Taras (name)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taras, is a male Eastern European name, used particularly in Ukraine. It is probably derived from the name of the city of Taras in Magna Graecia, currently Taranto. The city is in turn named after Taras, son of the god Poseidon. However, many in Ukraine believe that the name means "rebellious". The endemic spread of the name in that country is explained by its association with Taras Shevchenko, a national poet and unifying figure for the Ukrainian nation. Naming children by that name came to signify the allegiance to the national cause in a Ukrainian family.
