Tarafdar

Tarafdar is a surname found in Karnataka and Bengal
The Tarafdar title was given by kings with Afghan origin (Pre-Mughal era) (later however few Indian kings adopted this methodology). Tarafdar's were given lands (Taraf's) to manage. The land management included collecting normal tax and agriculture tax (lagaan), maintain all the accounts and handle all the monetary/financial transactions for his part of land. Since it was a prestigious position & title so ancestors stuck to it as a symbol of pride & prestige and it followed as a surname since.
Tarafdars are normally found in Karnataka and Bengal. (These were the places ruled by kings from Afgan origin). Tarafdars were also known as "khajanchi" (in Bengali).
