Tara Foundation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Tara Foundation is a charity organization dedicated to the support of low-income and disabled transgender people.
[edit] Origins
The foundation was started in 2001 with the assistance of a $10,000 grant from the Marin Community Foundation.
[edit] Focus
The main focus of the Tara Foundation is to provide financial assistance to transsexual men and women for sex reassignment surgery. Specifically, this assistance is aimed at disabled and low-income transgender individuals, where the surgery is costly to begin with. The Foundation states that most insurance companies do not cover transgender related treatments and maintains that the procedures are "medically necessary and life-changing" as opposed to elective or cosmetic.
The foundation also advocates the advancement of civil rights for transgender people, social acceptance, and the elimination of discrimination towards transgender people.
