Tar Heel is a town in Bladen County, North Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the town population was 70. Tar Heel is home to the largest slaughterhouse in the world which opened in 1992, operated by Smithfield Foods.

Tar Heel is located at 34°43′56″N, 78°47′32″W (34.732353, -78.792284)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 70 people, 32 households, and 19 families residing in the town. The population density was 117.5/km² (310.9/mi²). There were 36 housing units at an average density of 60.4/km² (159.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 87.14% White, 11.43% African American, and 1.43% from two or more races.

There were 32 households out of which 25.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% were non-families. 37.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.89.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 2.9% from 18 to 24, 20.0% from 25 to 44, 41.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 79.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 65.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $62,500. Males had a median income of $51,667 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,407. There were no families and 3.4% of the population living below the poverty line, including no under eighteens and 16.7% of those over 64.
