Tar (nautical)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A tar is a slang term used for a sailor. Hats and clothes were treated with tar to waterproof them. The tar-impregnated cloth or tarpaulin provided protection in harsh conditions.

This term is famously used in the Gilbert and Sullivan comedic opera HMS Pinafore in the song A British Tar.
