Tanya Nicole Kach, born 14 October 1981, was held captive by a security guard from her school for ten years in McKeesport, Pennsylvania in the United States after she was reported missing on 10 February 1996 at the age of fourteen. She was found alive on 23 March 2006. Tanya had been living at the home of Thomas John Hose, 48, a school security guard at Cornell Middle School when Kach was a student there. She had been living in the same town where her father lived in a home about two miles away.
Tanya was locked in a bedroom in Thomas Hose's house, which he shared with his elderly parents. During this time, she was told what to eat and wear. She also had no contact with anyone other than those who lived in Hose's house. Following her rescue, she gave a series of interviews with the media, but her family ended those interviews a short time later in order to focus on Tanya's recovery from her ordeal.
Hose was charged with statutory sexual assault and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, endangering the welfare of a child, corruption of a minor and interference with the custody of children. On February 12, 2007, the day of his preliminary hearing, Hose had reportedly taken a quantity of pills and stabbed himself, according to his defense attorney, Jim Ecker.
Judge John Zottola learned that Hose only sustained superficial wounds to his abdomen. Zottola immediately issued a gag order and set a new trial date for May 14th. The judge also ordered that Hose be committed to Mayview State Hospital for a period of 90 days following his release from Pittsburgh Mercy Hospital.
Judith Clara Sokol, 57, a former beautician of McKeesport, was charged with the same crimes.[1] She is accused of altering Kach's appearance and withholding information from child welfare investigators.[2] She allegedly dyed Kach's hair [1].
