Tanoan is a major linguistic grouping of Pueblo Indians. It is remotely related to the Kiowa language with which it forms the Kiowa-Tanoan language family and an even more remote relation with the Uto-Aztecan and Zuni languages has been suggested.

The Tanoan language family is divided into the Tiwa, Tewa and Towa. In 1937, the Tiwa numbered 2,122; the Tewa 1,708 and the Towa 648.
