Taniwharau is the motto underneath the logo of Hamilton's Fraser High School, formerly Hamilton Technical College; the logo depicted a two-headed water monster or taniwha. Hamilton Technical College existed from 1920 to 1970, when the college changed its name to Hamilton's Fraser High School and moved to the suburbs. Taniwharau is a non-standard conjoined spelling of the Māori phrase taniwha rau, meaning a hundred taniwha or chiefs. As explained in the article Taniwha, this phrase derives from a Māori proverb praising the Waikato district as having many chiefs, and its use in the school motto refers to many leaders said to have been produced by the school.
