Tanguturi Prakasham

Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasham (23 August 1872–1957) was the first Chief Minister of composite Andhra state. He was born into a Karanam family in a small village called Vinoda Rayudu Palem near Ongole, Andhra Pradesh. In his college days, his teacher was Hanumant Rao Naidu; Prakasham was into acting and played both male and female characters in dramas. Prakasham studied near Ongole, Rajahmundry, Madras and then in England. He believed that "Life is a series of accidents." He was Chairman of Rajahmundry Municipality from 1903–04. In London (1904-06) Prakasham was at Gray's Inn. Here he studied the laws and contitutions of various countries. It was here that the thought of swadeshi took roots in his mind for freedom from the British. In Britain, he was imprssed with the British culture and disciplined public life. Prakasham saw Gandhiji at London in 1914 in western dress for the first time as a barrister. He was involved with Gandhiji right from the start and participated in all the actitivites of Gandhiji. The first central Assembly elections which congress participated was in 1926.With the events that unfolded, it made all think "Prakasham is Andhra and Andhra is Prakasham". During 1924,due to a daring act in Madras(Chennai) during "Simon Go back " protest, where he bared his chest to shoot him during a peaceful satyagraha to the British soldiers, he was hailed as Andhra Kesari, some call him Bharat Kesari. He was a phenomenon for about 50 years in South India. He was jailed several times. Started "swarajya" in English from Madras in 1921. Was APCC, president, CWC member, He was a premier in Madras state, Was the first Chief Minister of composite Andhra state, with Kurnool as capital. Was instrumental in settingup of several schools, encouraged Khadi , all from his own pockets. Nagurjuna sagar, Prakasham barriage on river krishna and many more are the fruits of his labour.
