Tanah Abang

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tanah Abang is a subdistrict of Central Jakarta, Indonesia.

The subdistrict is divided into 7 administrative villages (kelurahan): Bendungan Hilir, Karet Tengsin, Kebon Melati, Kebon Kacang, Kampung Bali, Petamburan, and Gelora.

The subdistrict hosts the biggest textile market in Southeast Asia. The market has been known to exist since 1735. A small part of the market was destroyed by the fire in February 2003. The cause of fire remains as a controversial issue. Most people put the blame on overcrowding and economic motive.

It is of interest to note that Stamford Raffels' first wife Olivia Raffels is burried in a cemetry here. She died of malaria in Bogor in 1814, aged 43 years. At the time Stamford Raffels was the interim Govenor of the Dutch territory.
