Tamrakar
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tamrakar is a caste whose name is derived from the sanskrit words "tama," meaning copper and "aakar," meaning shape or to give shape. Hence the Tamrakars are coppersmiths who make copper and brass wares like household utensils and metal decorations.
Tamrakars are from Newar Community of Nepal and inhabitants of Kathmandu valley. They are the craftsmen of the valley with a distinct culture amongst Newars and are widespread all over the Kathmandu valley and outside the valley but mostly concentrated in the heart of the Patan city. Tamrakars follow both Hinduism and Buddhism. In their mother tongue, Nepal Bhasa, they are known as Tamo or Tamot.
