Tambaraparani River

Tamiraparani River, originates on the eastern slopes of Western Ghats in Tirunelveli District of the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. The origins of this river and its tributaries are the high mountain peaks at an altitude of about 2,000 m above sea level. It is fed both by monsoons and by its tributaries.
The Tamirabarani basin is situated between latitudes 8.21' N and 9.13' N and between longitudes 77.10' E. There are 40 meter high waterfalls located close to the river's origin. The river flows into the Papanasam Reservoir at its 16th km.[1]

The Tamiraparani River, with its network of tributaries, is the chief river in the district. It's tributaries include the Peyar, Ullar, Karaiyar, Servalar, Pampar, Manimuthar River, Varahanathi, Ramanathi, Jambunathi, Gadananathi, Kallar, Karunaiyar, Pachaiyar River, Chittar River, Gundar, Aintharuviar, Hanumanathi, Karuppanathi and Aluthakanniar. The only two of the district's rivers that are not connected to the Tamiraparani are the Nambiar and the Hanumanathi.[2]

The many anicuts, dams and reservoirs on the Tambaraparani River, along with those on the Manimuthar River, provide a large proportion of the water for irrigation and power generation for Tirunelveli District.[3]
