Talywain
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Talywain is situated between Garndiffaith, Abersychan and Pentwyn. An old and cultured rural area that has a great and long heritage in education and rural mining. The old British Coal mining (the NCB or British Coal) site was a great source of income and work for many of the local settlers and attracted people from far and wide with the chance of a stable job and living. The mine was very pro-active and produced a lot of coal and produce for a good half of a century before closing in May 1974 due to being unsafe. After the site was no longer used for mining, the 'British close Comprehensive of grammar' was opened in the late 70s. Although a very modern and attractive school its life was short-lived due to regulations with laws and safety and had to be shut. This allowed near neighbour 'Abersychan Girls school of Grammar' after 50 years of being single sexed to become a Mixed senior school.
Talywain offers some incredible views with beautiful surrounding scenery and a very warm small community. It offers several public houses along with a few small shops and a nearby viaduct which used to be used as a main train track and transport from Pontypool to Blaenavon for many years. Talywain also has its own Rugby and footballs clubs along with a soon to be 18 hole Golf Course and Driving range. Talywain's own football club and team is Fairfield F.C, The team has been running well over 30 years with a long history of cups and achievements at domestic level.
