[edit] Plot summary

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

In a decrepit motel room, the Winchesters are testing each other's patience to the limit. In the midst of investigating a series of bizarre incidents on a college campus, one brother is certain that the other is playing pranks on him.

The case they are trying to solve has three victims who worked or studied at the same building in the college. Each had been the target of an urban legend-like trick that resulted in death or grievous discomfort. Victim #1 was a philandering professor killed by a suicidal ingenue ghost. Victim #2 was a wicked pledgemaster molested by little green men. Victim #3 was an unconscientious animal testing researcher mutilated by an alligator in the sewer.

The Winchesters try to find a connection between the three and call on Bobby for help. The veteran hunter turns up to find the brothers at war with each other. Sam has accused Dean of stealing his money and his computer while the older Winchester is certain that Sam has punctured the tires of his beloved Impala. Each brother recounts to Bobby the highlights of the investigation from his own biased perspective. Dean greatly exaggerates Sam's gentle empathy for strangers and Sam paints Dean as a debauched glutton.

Judging by the brothers' uncommonly strained relations, Bobby deduces that there is a Trickster demigod behind all the chaos; it is a spirit that plays pranks on the evil to give them a taste of their own medicine. The Winchesters suspect the culprit to be the ubiquitous janitor of the college building.

Finding scant evidence at the janitor's workplace, Sam leaves to search the suspect's home after some heated words with an impatient Dean. The older brother goes after the janitor on his own. Entering the building's auditorium, Dean finds the janitor waiting for him together with two beautiful women who try to seduce him. Dean declines the ladies' advances which are actually the Trickster's peace offering to him. He draws out a stake to kill the Trickster.

Their earlier argument merely a guise, Sam and Bobby appear to back Dean up but the Trickster gets the upper hand. Bobby and Sam are chased by a conjured chainsaw wielding madman while Dean is pummeled by the women. Just when it seems that the demigod is about to triumph, Sam tosses a stake to Dean who impales the Trickster through his heart.

The brothers and Bobby flee the scene of the slaying but inside the auditorium, the real Trickster looks down at the fake dead one.

Spoilers end here.

[edit] Production notes

  • Dean introduces Sam as "Major Tom", a reference to "Space Oddity" by David Bowie.
  • At one point when the camera focuses on the dead Trickster, you could see that the actor is breathing a little (focus on his stomach) before holding on to his breath again.

[edit] Goof

  • When Sam and Dean had the EMF (which they said was a instrument used to find wires in the walls) it did not go off when they were standing right beside the trickster. (This may be due to the fact that the trickster is not a spirit so it may not give off any EMF.)

[edit] Trivia

  • Although an undefined demigod, Bobby speculates that the Trickster could be similar to Loki or Anansi, a trickster spirit of Scandinavian and African lore respectively.
