Taldren, Inc.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taldren, Inc. in Costa Mesa, California, was the developer behind the Star Trek: Starfleet Command series published by Activision and Interplay.

The company was founded by Erik Bethke, Sean Dumas, and Zachary Drummond as well as 6 other members of the original Starfleet Command development team at Interplay.

The company lasted from 1999 to 2003; at the conclusion of the Starfleet Command series, the company was dissolved, with Sean Dumas heading off to Seven Studios in Santa Monica, Zachary Drummond to Seattle, and Erik Bethke left to Seoul, Korea to form GoPets [1] an online 3D pets game.

Taldren was working on "Black 9" when it folded. "Black 9" was to be a multiplatform game for PC, Xbox and PS2 and was to be the break away title for Taldren. Due to very weak presentation at E3 and the fact that Taldren had broken its contract with the publisher "Majesco" the game was cancelled.

"Black 9" was a well funded, however the "Art Team" consisted primarily of students and most of the programmers had no any previous experience with the unreal engine. This led to no guidance for the art team with regard to the setting of limits for model design. Also several programmers where delayed in there contributions to the project as they where tasked with patching their latest release of "Starfleet Command III". While Taldren had performed well with "Starfleet" titles it was unable to develop its own property and lacked the creative edge and management knowhow to make a "playable" game with "Black 9".
