Tail 'Gator is the English name of a Game Boy video game made by Natsume and Vap in 1991. In unofficial translations, the game is sometimes known as Crocodile. In the game, the player plays a small alligator/crocodile which whacks its tail as attack.

[edit] Gameplay

The game is a slightly atypical side-scrolling action/adventure game. Instead of the traditional sequence of levels, Tail Gator consists of 4 'Areas'. The first three of these Areas allow the player to choose from four levels in each Area, although the player must complete all four levels in an Area to advance to the next. Bosses lie in wait, one or two in each Area, and are located at the end of certain stages. Area 4 contains only two levels, which must be completed in sequence, and end in a final boss.

Each level has a sequence of rooms of varying complexity, containing enemies (which can reappear after they are defeated) and chests. In order to advance to the next room, a player must break open (by whacking with the tail, of course) all the chests, in order to find a key. Some chests contain point bonuses, others contain power units (which can be collected to give the protagonist alligator/crocodile a temporary projectile attack), others contain hearts (which replenish the character's H.P.), and some contain bombs (which destroy all enemies on the screen). The last chest to be opened always contains the key; all other chest contents seem to be randomly determined.

The game ends when either the alligator/crocodile loses all its H.P. or when the final boss is defeated (the latter producing an ending sequence).

[edit] Soundtrack

The game's soundtrack consists of 11 tracks, which display a copious amount of swing rhythm. They are Title Screen, Level Select (Area lobby), Top Level, Upper Middle Level, Lower Middle Level, Bottom Level, Area 4 Level, Boss Theme, Level Complete, Ending Theme, Game Over.
