Taganskaya (Таганская) is a station on the Koltsevaya Line of the Moscow Metro. It was designed by K.S. Ryzhkov and A.A. Medvedev and opened on January 1, 1950. The station is decorated with fourteen large triangular majolica panels which include cameo portraits of heroes of the Red Army as well as intricate floral designs. The panels facing the centre of the station are coloured pale blue while those facing outwards are untinted. There was originally a marble bas-relief at the end of the platform depicting Stalin surrounded by an adoring throng, but this was torn out in 1966 when the passage to Taganskaya-Radialnaya was built. Another artwork in the station is a circular ceiling panel entitled "Victory Salute" by A.K. Shiryayev, located in the intermediate hall between the two sets of escalators.
The station's grand entrance vestibule is located on the west side of Taganskaya Square, where Taganskaya Ulitsa intersects the Sadovoye Koltso.
On the 18th November 2005 the vestibule was be closed for a year for restoration and upgrade. During this time old escalators (installed in 1949) had to be replaced, same for turnkits. Also during this time the floor will was remarbled and the electrical and engineering systems underwent a major upgrade. The station was during all this works in operation, although access to it was available only through the transfers.
