TagWorld

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

TagWorld is an Internet start-up competing directly with MySpace. It advertises greater customization than MySpace, and tagging support for most of its content. Tagworld has a notable feature of being able to upload 1 GB of music, pictures and videos to the site for later playback from anywhere with an internet connection.

Some other features include blogging, uploading pictures and videos, and seeing who has viewed a users page.

The web site launched November 2005. By May 2006, it had 1.6 million registered users, and by June 2006, it had passed the 2m users mark.

TagWorld is made mostly by using Web 2.0 and Ajax techniques. It features a very 'easy-to-use' interface that simplifies the operations involved in customisation.

TagWorld is a privately held company based in Santa Monica, California. It was founded in July 2005.

[edit] Features

TagWorld is a blogging website similar to MySpace. As such it includes standard features:

  • Blogging
  • 'Friends' list
  • Music list - NOTE in TagWorld, music tracks are stored on TagWorld and can be played back as playlists
  • Profile - NOTE Video Profile is now available in TagWorld
  • Photos
  • Customised colourscheme and formatting
  • Comments - NOTE Video Comments are now available in TagWorld
  • RSS/Subscriptions - TagWorld friends are automatically subscribed to your blog

However, TagWorld also includes some features not present or different to competitors:

[edit] Music discovery engine

Similar to Yahoo LaunchCAST, this allows users to open a 'radio station' playing similar songs without adverts or interruption.

[edit] Video chat

TagWorld has released an IM client that allows real-time messaging with friends, either using text or with webcams and microphones. The software is still in BETA, but the site owners advertise that soon users will be able to IM without having the client open or installed. This so far seems limited to IM'ing users who DO have the client running.

This is specific to TagWorld users, and so far the program is limited to these features - as well as changing the colour of text and adding smilies - so there is no real competition with MSN (Windows Live Messenger) or Yahoo Messenger.

MySpace, TagWorld's main rivals, recently released MySpaceIM, a standalone client similar to TagWorld Video Chat, but with MSN Messenger's 'Winks' (here called Zaps) replacing webcam functionality.

[edit] Tags

Tags are labels applied to pictures, audio, video and posts to help searching.

[edit] Widgets

Special features (usually Flash-based) that can be easily customized and imported from TagWorldWidgets.com (an official site) directly into TagWorld, or unofficial fan-based sites using HTML codes. Examples of widgets include:

  • clocks
  • horoscopes/compatibility
  • games
  • notes
  • video profiles
  • graphics/animations for comments ("thanks for the add")
  • customized mouse pointers (not supported in FireFox)
  • ready-made site designs (just enter the details for your requested color scheme and it is automatically created, and displayed as a HTML code that can be added)
  • "Whore Trains" - automatic/faster ways to add friends, either on bulk or without viewing profiles/clicking "add as friend"

[edit] Other notable website features

  • Multi-page website
  • Modules can be dragged-and-dropped and edited
  • Rich-Text and HTML editing everywhere (except comments, which allow HTML) - means the text formatting can be changed using drop-down menus, so users do not need to understand HTML or BBcode.
  • Large animated smileys
  • One-click 'voting' for each blog post/multimedia item (picture/audio/video)
  • Sort lists of users/posts/multimedia by date and popularity
  • Video profiles
  • Video comments
  • Bulletins - quick messages to all friends at once that don't get emailled or sent to inboxes (displayed on Home Page)
  • Now it also has a chatting service where you can chat using your webcam, speaker and of course the keyboard.
