Tacuabe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tacuabe was a Charrua native of the region which is now known as Uruguay.
After the European conquest and colonization, the Charrua population declined at the hands of local authorities, and they were practically exterminated by 1830. The last four charruas, including Vaimaca, Senaque, Guyunusa and Tacuabe, were taken to Paris by François Curel in 1833, to be displayed like circus attractions.
Guyunusa and Tacuabe gave birth to a daughter few months after they were taken. Vaimaca, Senaque and Guyunusa died during the first year in France. Tacuabe and his baby escaped, and disappeared after reaching the city of Lyon.
In Montevideo, Uruguay there is a monument The last Charruas, depicting Tacuabe.
