Tabataba'i (nesbat)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tabataba'i was originally a nesbat, or title, that denoted that both the titled individual's mother and father were Seyyed, meaning direct descendents of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

This original usage of the term has lost meaning, however, as the title has been adopted over the century as a family name, and passed down to future generations even though both mother and father's side were not Seyyed.
