[edit] Summary
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image of a Au coated replica of a ta-C "diamond-like" coating. Structural elements are not crystallites but are nodules of sp3 bonded carbon atoms in which lattice geometries randomly alternate between the cubic and hexagonal polytypes of diamond. Scale marker corresponds to about 1% of the thickness of a human hair. The cobblestone-like structure is at such small scale that such coatings appear mirror smooth.
