T-95

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The T-94 or T-95 is a prototype main battle tank, in development at Uralvagonzavod in the Russian Federation (designers of the T-72 and T-90). Most information about this tank is speculative. It is said to be of a novel design, with a very large smoothbore tank gun of reportedly 135mm or 152mm calibre, in a remotely-controlled mount. Such an arrangement is anticipated to improve crew survivability compared to existing designs, because the crew compartment is separated from the ready ammunition supply, and also because the tank would be completely hidden when the tank is in a hull-down position. The crew would number just three, all being carried within the hull itself.

Historically, Russian/Soviet tanks are given official designations when they are adopted for production, so even the name T-95 is not authoritative. The actual current GABTU code of the vehicle is Obyekt 195 (Russian: Объект 195).

The prototype tank was announced by the Russian Minister of Defense in 2000. It has been speculated that while Russian forces adopted the T-90 as an interim tank, they anticipated adopting the T-95 as an advanced fifth-generation tank, but the current status of this project is unknown. Another recent Russian prototype tank, the Black Eagle tank built by Omsk Transmash, appears to have not been seriously considered by the Russian forces, but built for the export market.

On September 11, 2006, Agence France-Presse reported that an anonymous Western diplomat had stated that Saudi Arabia had held talks with Rosoboronexport, the Russian arms export monopoly, about buying arms including T-95 tanks. Saudi Arabia has a tradition of buying Western equipment, and had previously tested French Leclerc main battle tanks.
