The name Tariq has three meanings:
First there is the meaning in the arabic language. As Tariq is the noun to the arabic verb taraka (Arabic: طرق meaning "knocking") and for this means the knocking one.
The second meaning is the meaning from the holy Qur'an, where Tariq is the name of the morning star, which is described as the shining star. More recent discoveries about pulsar stars have prompted some scholars to associate those Neutronic stars with Tariq, where knocking equates pulsing.
And the third meaning is traveler of night (Raat ka Musafir).
