Sony introduced their new 2nd generation Vaio SZ Series early in the summer of 2006. The notebooks featured in the series are ultra-portable and light weight with a 13.3" WXGA screen, with the Widescreen aspect ratio. The top models with carbon fiber casings weights 1.69 kg (3.7 lb).

The SZ381P/X is currently the most powerful model in the SZ series for the North American market. SZ381P/X is the third generation version of the SZ-series from Sony featuring the new Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor.

The most powerful model for the European market at the moment is the limited edition SZ2VP. Core 2 Duo is not yet available for VAIOs on the European market.

Differences between these models are limited to the amount of memory, the choice of CPU, hard drive disk space, and of course the price.

The SZ381P/X is delivered with 2 GB RAM - twice the amount of the European SZ2VP with 1 GB RAM. A 160 GB hard drive is used in the SZ381P/X while the SZ2VP is equipped with a 120 GB hard drive. The SZ381P/X comes with the Core 2 Duo T7400, 2.16GHz CPU where the SZ2VP comes with the Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T2600, it also at 2.16GHz.

All SZ2 models sold at Sony's online stores comes with Microsoft® Windows® XP.

The SZ Series is delivered with three different case designs all though not a subject to custom configuration regardless of the system specifications. The designs and materials used are fully dependent on the specific model.

The keyboard is ergonomically designed keyboard features a greater width of 19 mm with a 3 mm stroke.
